RIP Jennifer Wilde - Thank you for such a wonderful romance
By Luna
This novel, far and away, blew away my standards for a romance novel. Whereas a lot of romance novels are straightforward and not very complicated, Jennifer Wilde inserts very three dimensional characters and poignant incidents that wrenches one's heart. This book is definitely bittersweet, engaging, and highly recommended.

There are a few notable differences in this book from other novels I have read. One of them is that the author writes in the first person point of view. As a romance reader, I am not used to this but, honestly, it hardly mattered. The story was just so engaging. If I could, I would give this book 6 stars, as it stands high above the normal fare of romance novels I've read today.

This coming of age novel follows the life of, first a girl, and then a woman by the name of Angela Howard who first encounters a young, innocent love but learns to let it go due to the circumstances of life. Despite the obstacles and heartbreak, she still follows her dreams to lead a very fulfilling life involving three different men in different periods of her life. She's brazen and direct, but still very sweet and lovable. I cannot begin to describe everything contained in this 600-page book except to say that the descriptions are detailed, the dialogue is wonderfully witty, and you will not regret reading this classic.

As a side note, I find it very sad that the author passed away more than a decade ago but am grateful to have discovered such a treasure in romance novels.

Where's the Romance
By Amazon Customer
While many readers gave this book a high rating, I kept asking myself where's the romance? Angela may have loved Hugh first but I'm not sure she really knew the meaning of love any better than Hugh. Her liaison with Jamie ended badly. Then she had a second chance with Hugh but because she refused to see his need to reclaim what he felt belonged to him, she told him it was over when he walked out the door for Italy. I loathed her marriage to Clinton Meredith. She had hated him in her youth and he tried to buy her from her stepmother, yet she did an about face and married him professing her pitiful little love. While she slept with them all, I failed to discern an intimate emotional relationship in any of these cases. This was a 600 page that entertained but did not leave me satisfied. I wish I could have adored the characters rather than tired of their back and forth I love you in words but not actions. In the end, she walked out on the one man she was supposed to have loved mind, body and soul. This just does not ring true. Maybe I'm having problems with it because I would not have given up the man I'd wanted since my youth. Of course, I wouldn't have married his cousin either. While the book has some interesting twists, it focuses too much on its setting and not enough on the characters. Of course, it is vintage and not great vintage when compared to Kathleen Woodiwiss or Johanna Lindsey. The ending simply left me dissatisfied.

Memorable!
By Corrina Pollock
I first read this book as a young teenager--it was one of MANY books I read back then. Two decades later, I have read hundreds of romance novels. Angel in Scarlet stayed with me. I thought about it again in my early twenties and had to buy it. I've read it three times since and actually came here to see if there was a kindle version (my book is buried and we're in the process of moving.)

From the moment Angie is spying on her crush from the tree and tangles with her future love interest, I fell in love with her. You get to watch her grow and mature over the course of the book. Jennifer has a gift of making people laugh and cry, and truly experience the pain of the heroine. Like another reviewer stated, I also have sided with different love interests each time I've read it! This is really the only romance book that I've never gotten tired of reading.
