Michael Powell's CURIOUS EVENTS IN HISTORY briefly details "forty of the most curious events in world history." A hodge-podge of historical trivia, CURIOUS EVENTS IN HISTORY is an entertaining read.

Among the events covered in this 2011 Fall River Press release are: Ramesses II's efforts to rewrite history; the Greek law scribe Draco's unfortunate death; medical uses of Egyptian mummies; the Mongol invasions of Japan; the top hat's introduction to English society; the day Niagara Falls stopped flowing; Japanese volcano suicides of the 1930s; the last execution in the Tower of London; etc.

Though some of the material in Powell's book was known to me, other items were not. Amusing, informative and inexpensive - $7.98 on the B&N Remainder table - CURIOUS EVENTS IN HISTORY is an ideal lunch-time companion. Recommended.

Turgid too often

Too many uses of abstract generalised terms.

Attention authors - especially academics: while it's true that generalisations 'cover all bases', if you use ones that are too broad, they end up saying NOTHING.
They become empty vessels with NO INFORMATION in them: like some hot air balloon become so broad and expansive there's more air than balloon!

The topic of qualitative research - especially data analysis - is already quite abstract, because it is about data, concepts, the relationships between concepts and so on.

When writing about such an abstract topic, this author used far too many generalisations and abstractions without attaching EXAMPLES that ensured the information MADE SENSE - actually CONVEYED INFORMATION (the purpose of a textbook).

Here's just one MILD example of thousands. The author is describing suggested steps to take when applying the method of 'Narrative Analysis' to data. After writing earlier about finding themes in the data, she says:

"4. Make some notes about the thematic ideas you have developed from the transcript. Then use them to indicate where the participant provides accounts for his or her actions and to exhibit the general structure of the story. Also look for any interruptions/discontinuities that may contradict the themes."

So WTF does this mean exactly?

Surely these concepts are abstract enough without describing them with such flocculesence as this!

Authors like this one - a mild perpetrator, it has to be said - make students' lives hell. Worse, they deprive society of knowledge. Every academic these days should be made to write a yearly paper on Orwell's essay Politics and the English Language.

Margaret Roberts is widely revered as the expert on natural herbs and healing plants. Now her book on teas and herbal infusions is bound to become a staple in everyone's kitchen and is a marvelous gift book! The book is beautifully illustrated with full color photos. Each double page had a photo and a good explanation of how this particular infusion tea is good for your health and what the benefits are. She explains the best way to make these infusions. You will want to try every one of these delicious teas from A (anise) to Y (yarrow). You'll love this book, especially great for winter time cozies!

Another New Book from the Master of the Herb Garden

I collect everything that Margaret writes about - I am so thrilled that she has started offering her books as ebooks now as well. I remember having her books in our house when I was still in school and how I went and made myself some Rosemary tea, on her advice, to help me study for my exams. I still use the advice in her Companion Planting book every year in the veggie garden and make my own face creams according to her recipes. Margaret Roberts is a household name in South Africa and it is well-deserved.
