the Disney Diaries Volume 1, by Robin Goble Wilmot, Larry Wilmot

Long ago, Larry “Planning is for Wimps” Wilmot and Robin “Let Me Check My Schedule” Goble lived on two different continents. Despite countless personality differences, they both shared a passion for Disney, a love of travel, and a habit of writing about their journeys. Now, you can read all about their adventures in “The Disney Diaries,” a compilation of trip reports spanning thirteen years, two continents, three countries and an infinite number of bad jokes.

Their diaries cover numerous trips to Disneyland Resort in California, Disneyland Paris, and Walt Disney World in Florida and are written in their own unique styles which Larry (the pessimist) likes to refer to as “fairly good, mainly Robin's bits;” whereas Robin (the optimist) prefers to call them “awesome-covered awesome with an awesome filling!”

Journey with them as they travel with family and friends and share an irreverent look at all things Disney. You’ll laugh till your spleen explodes; you’ll cry till there’s enough Kleenex on the floor to reverse engineer a tree.

Good premise cannot overcome lack of quality
By L. Christopher Bird
First some context for my review. I am a huge fan of Disney Media and Parks, but willing to see faults when they are there. I love the theme park experience both actually doing it, and visiting vicariously through other's accounts of trips to the parks, which is what the description of this book promised. I will admit that this review is based on a partial reading of the text, but if I am not enjoying something, I am in no way obligated to continue through to the end to give it a fair chance, and while there are some gems hidden in there, all the digging one has to do to find them, gives too little reward for too much effort.

The first report, by Larry, seemed to focus on the negative. I actually came away with the impression that he does not enjoy Disney World at all, but visits there time after time to satisfy some sort of compulsion, or he thinks that finding and relaying fault is an enjoyable pursuit. It is obvious he has a clear idea of the "right" way to do a Disney trip, and refers to those who do things differently as "losers".

The second trip report was also by Larry, but not wanting to work through another one, I skipped ahead to Robin's first trip report. This was much more enjoyable, as she seemed to convey joy and happiness, as well as relating the experiences of her young nephew, and a few friendly interactions with other guests (the very young girl dressed as Cinderella she interacted with stands out to me). And while the tone was an improvement over Larry, it did share some of the lack of quality that detracts from this book overall.

It is clear that this book could have benefited by some competent (or any) proofreading and copy-editing. It seems to be self-edited by the authors, and a parsing through an automated spell check was done and it was called good. This leads to many problems which should be unexcusable in a professional work, such as substituting the word "Fist" instead of "First". Even allowing for differences in British and American spellings, this was most evident in Larry's trip report, but was still present in Robin's.

I am also under the impression, that these reports are very "stream of consciousness" probably intended to be posted on an online forum. They have a very unrefined "first draft" quality to them. Reading these on a free forum where they are members of a community I belong to, this could be forgiven -- or even expected. But as a commercial product? They should have gone through some editorial process, and refined and polished these reports.

One of the things I would have left out in the transition from forum to print (or whatever the equivalent of an e-book is) is to remove the use of acronyms. I can understand the use of them in a fan-forum when you are typing off the cuff, and the acronyms are commonly known and used in replies, but again in a published book, it just looks unprofessional. One thing that was very annoying about this practice, is that an attraction would be mentioned, then an acronym given in parentheses after it, only for the acronym to not appear anywhere else in the narrative.

In summary, this had the potential to be good with a little more effort and professionalism, unfortunately, the authors failed to bring this to bear.

Not what I hoped it to be. Too repetitive and there are grammatical and spelling errors all over. Don't waste your money.

Be Prepared to Have Your Ideas about Health Challenged
By Shaunta Grimes
This week, when we were in Las Vegas, I finished reading Dr. Linda Bacon's book Health At Every Size: The Surprising Truth About Your Weight.

Bacon didn't coin the term Health at Every Size (HAES), as she points out in the book. It was a movement before her involvement. But she has written a book that spells it out in a very readable, understandable way.

Health at Every Size starts with a discussion about the social and cultural myths surrounding weight. She talks about how at different times in the last century, women's magazines have had articles about how to GAIN weight, instead of how to lose it. Maybe the most important lesson in the book is how the weight loss industry, which includes government agencies, lies and manipulates statistics in order to make us believe that if we are fat, we are going to die.

1.) We're all going to die. Skinny does not equal immortal. (In case you were wondering.)

2.) The Center for Disease Control helped to design the `obesity crisis' with false statistics.

3.) The act of trying to obtain a `perfect' weight causes far more health problems than the act of trying to be as healthy as possible at your current weight, whatever that may be.

The first part of this book, for me anyway, felt like a battle cry.

The next part of the book talks about Health at Every Size and how to implement it into your life.

I'll admit something here. I skipped ahead to section two. And I was confused. Because I was looking for menu plans and concrete steps to follow. I've read a lot of diet and `life style change' books, starting with Susan Powter and ending right here. They all have steps to follow.

This book doesn't break HAES down that way, and at first I was confused. Because-well, how am I supposed to do this if you don't tell me how? Where are the charts? What about a training schedule or a list of HAES friendly snacks?

Then I went back and read from the beginning. (This was one of those times that my penchant for reading books backwards didn't work out for me.)

Turns out that HAES isn't a diet. I was a little slow integrating that information, because I actually knew that going in. It isn't a fitness plan. It isn't anything other than a validation, permission to treat yourself well right this minute. So Bacon's section two talks more about easing yourself out of what may well be a decades long addiction to dieting. It gives you permission to exercise because it's fun and feels good, or even as training, rather than as a punishment for the sin of being fat. To enjoy whatever food you want to eat-literally, whatever food-without putting a moral judgment on it.

HAES breaks down like this:

1. Love yourself. Yourself today, not yourself 10 or 50 or 150 pounds from now. Your body is just your body, it is neutral morally.

2. Eat good food, eat what you want and enough of it, and stop when you're full.

3. Move because it feels good, it is good for your health (yes, even if you never lose a pound) and it's fun.

Deceptively simple, right?

Bacon does talk some about set points and how you may be keeping your body above its comfortable weight by eating past when you're full and avoiding exercise. I was impressed, however, that she didn't turn this into a weight loss book.

Eating well and moving your body moderately will improve your fitness and your health-even if your body never gives up a single pound.

If you're anything like me, you have so many years of `accepting' that your health and your weight are intricately tied, that turning that off is really difficult. It's one thing to say "I can be fat and still fit" and another to believe it deep down. Even in the face of evidence that it's true. Even knowing that feeling like you have to thin before you earn being fit is a response to cultural conditioning.

You can buy this book on Amazon for about $10. You might be able to get it from your library. However you get it, prepare to have your ideas about your body, you culture and yourself be challenged.

Half great, half terrible
By Jodi-Hummingbird
It's flawed in parts but I got a lot out of this book overall. The core messages of this book are solid and timely; Listen to your body and eat real food that makes you feel good. Starving yourself to be thinner ends in weight gain for most of us and a raising of your set-point weight, so don't do it. Move in ways that make you feel good without worrying about burning calories. Don't pay attention to super-skinny ideals or weight-loss-diet-hype and just do what works for you and makes you feel healthiest. Skinniness is not the same as healthiness and it is the latter which is most important.

The writing of the book seemed clumsy at times. I feel the main points could have been put more simply and that some of the text was too long and meandering in getting to a point.

The parts on accepting and finding your set-point weight were quite good. One of the strongest parts of the book was the letters at the back of the book which were to give to family to let them know it'd be great if they made no positive or negative comments about your size changing because you're focusing on health and not mere weight change. A letter for doctors was also included.

There are also some not-so-good parts of this book. I feel this book would have been a lot stronger if the sections on nutrition were omitted entirely and the book just made the points about health being more important than weight more clearly and powerfully. The author should focus on the topic she really knows a lot about.

The nutrition information in this book really is bad. It's basically a description of the food pyramid. 30% of calories from fat is talked about as way too much fat - this despite the fact lipid experts such as Mary Enig PhD say that for some of us 30% is nowhere near enough dietary fat. 10% of calories from protein is said to be too high a protein intake. So what you're left with is a diet that is probably 70% or more carbohydrate. That is a level many of us just cannot cope with and which makes us feel constantly starving hungry, ill and weak even after meals. Not to mention making us gain weight like crazy even if we're putting everything we have into eating in a healthy way.

For some of us eating beans counts as a hungry-making starch food, not a protein food. Not telling readers that some people just can't cope with high-carb diets and are not suited to them sets them up for failure following the HAES plan and then blaming themselves for it. The same is true for people with food allergies to common foods such as grains and soy. Eating foods you are allergic to makes you crave them, it is one of the symptoms. The concept of eating the same old junk but in moderation just doesn't work for many of us. It sets us up to fail.

The message to enjoy junk foods and other not-so-healthy common foods in moderation is problematic. Some of us physically can't eat these foods in moderation, that is the whole problem. They do things to our bodies which shut off our bodies natural satiety signals and make us feel unwell afterwards too - or constantly unwell if we eat them often enough. This subject is tackled brilliantly in the book `A Life Unburdened' - I highly recommend it. It also explains why saturated fat is a healthy food that is good for you, along with cholesterol-containing foods! It is the new fangled unnatural fats which don't suit us, not the ones we have been eating for tens of thousands of years such as animal fat.

There is so much wrong information in the nutritional chapters, but it's also very badly written and constantly contradicts itself. The research quality is poor. The author says we have virtually the same genes today as our Paleolithic ancestors had so we will do best eating the same diet they did - a diet which gave animal foods very special importance. Then she says that because of industrial meat farming practices the best way to emulate a Paleo diet today is to eat a diet of mostly plants with meat there as a condiment only or avoided entirely because everyone knows meat and animal fat is unhealthy. Ummm...what?

High-fibre (highly processed) breakfast cereals are super healthy and so are highly-processed foods such as tofu says the author. The huge problems with soy as a staple food (as explained in books like `The Whole Soy Story') are never mentioned. The problems with anti-nutrients in whole grains are never mentioned as of course are the ways to soak and otherwise prepare grains to reduce them. The book repeats lots of myths about fibre and omits information that explains that for some of us a lower fibre diet and fibre from vegetables and fruits only (and not grains) suits us best. No amount of fibre in your diet will make your meals satisfying to you if you aren't eating enough fat in your diet, or protein.

Accurate information on eating what our ancestors ate and the foods our genes are best suited to is in books such as `Primal Body, Primal Mind.'

I'm not convinced by the `thrify gene' theory this book puts so much importance in. A few good books - such as `Good Calories, Bad Calories' - have done a great job debunking this myth far more convincingly. Seeing how ignorant and misled the author was on basic nutrition theory it also made it hard to have much faith in the quality of some of the more novel ideas on body chemistry and weight regulation put forth in this book.

At the end of one of the nutrition chapters the author says that if in doubt eat food that is as whole as possible and as minimally messed with as possible. That should have been the entire nutrition section really. Eating what makes you feel good makes sense but doing so when guided by a bit of basic nutrition knowledge is essential too, especially if you have any health or nutrition issues. It helps you better understand the messages your body is trying to send you.

I give the sections on focusing on health and not the scales 4.5 out of 5. I give the nutrition section 1 out of 5 so have settled on a 3 star rating overall. I'd love to see an updated edition of this book that was much shorter and sharper and that omitted all nutrition information. I'd buy several copies for friends and family. But right now I couldn't give anyone a book with such problematic nutrition information in it.

Strength in Numbers. The Warriors’ 2014-2015 slogan fit this championship team to a T. While they were spearheaded by NBA MVP Stephen Curry, it took a true team effort and display of depth to claim their first NBA title in four decades. Buoyed by a dominant regular season in which they won a league-leading 67 games, the Warriors throttled the NBA with an explosive yet precise offense and a versatile and stingy defense. They cruised through the first three rounds of the playoffs, only losing three games as they dispatched the Pelicans, Grizzlies and Rockets, setting up a dream NBA Finals matchup with LeBron James and the Cavaliers, where coach Steve Kerr’s team overcame a 2-1 series deficit to defeat Cleveland in six games.   Packed with unmatched analysis and dynamic color photography from the Bay Area’s largest newspaper publisher, Golden Boys takes fans through the Warriors’ historic journey, from Steve Kerr taking over as head coach to Klay Thompson’s red-hot 37-point quarter to Stephen Curry’s MVP brilliance to the final horn sounding in Cleveland. This commemorative edition also includes in-depth profiles of Curry, Kerr, Thompson, breakout star Draymond Green, gritty defender Andrew Bogut, rising talent Harrison Barnes and other fan favorites.

A great reminder of a memorable season and team
By Allyn B.
As a longtime Warriors fan the 2014-2015 season was an unexpected dream come true. I didn't need an overboard or overly expensive memoir of it though; so this was perfect as a happy reminder of those fun games, and the players we have come to know and respect.

if you want truly comprehensive and in-depth analysis of the season this might not suffice; but it gives a plenty good overview and insight for the adamant but not rabid fan like me.

The Golden State Warriors are the all time greatest!!
By J.D. in Yorktown
What's to say? The Golden State Warriors are the all time greatest!!!! Steph is a wonder when he gets the ball and is ready to make a play. I'm just full of amazement when I watch him. He's among the very best of his chosen career. I'm not putting down any of the other good players on other teams. There are plenty!! But, Steph, for his age and experience, is extremely well placed. He almost gives off an aura of magic when that ball leaves his hands. I think he was born with the proverbial silver basketball in his hands. :)

Uninspiring
By Chris O'Brien
Whilst not strictly a bad memoir of the Warriors 2015 championship, this lazily stitched together collection of feature articles and game recaps from throughout the season was bland and lacked any significant insights into the team and their journey. The chapter structure was also strangely arranged, with the Finals recaps at the beginning no the book ending abruptly with no real concluding comments after the Conference Finals summary.

The quality of the images dotted throughout this digital version of the book also varied wildly, some being in such low resolution as to be insulting in this HD digital era.

If you read any recaps of the Warriors playoff games or have even the most basic background knowledge of the team there really won't be much in this book that you don't already know.

If fate sent you an email, would you answer?

Then Graham finds out that Ellie's Maine hometown is the perfect location for his latest film, and he decides to take their relationship from online to in-person. But can a star as famous as Graham really start a relationship with an ordinary girl like Ellie? And why does Ellie want to avoid the media's spotlight at all costs?

From School Library Journal
Gr 8 Up-This well-crafted, character-driven love story opens with an endearing prologue told in emails. When 16-year-old Ellie O'Neill accidentally starts an exchange with a stranger, she doesn't expect their virtual conversations to turn into a romance. But over the course of a few months, that's exactly what happens. Ellie doesn't know the boy's name until he shows up on her doorstep. He's Graham Larkin, a famous movie star whose next film just happens to be shooting in her quiet Maine town. While most of the girls are dying to be in her shoes, she has reservations. Ellie is the illegitimate daughter of a prominent politician, and her mom moved them to escape the unrelenting media. Now they struggle financially in order to maintain their privacy. Graham's life is anything but private. However, though he is handsome and wealthy, the teen is also lonely and uninspired. His parents, uncomfortable with his fame, choose to distance themselves from him, while his controlling manager wants Graham to date his beautiful costar for the good publicity. Despite those obstacles, Ellie and Graham sustain a sweet and genuine romance. Their chemistry is undeniable, and readers will wonder about their love story long after the last page. An excellent recommendation for fans of Maureen Johnson.-Kimberly Garnick Giarratano, Rockaway Township Public Library, NJα(c) Copyright 2013. From Booklist
When “GDL” gets an e-mail address wrong, the surprise recipient, “EONeill,” decides to reply. The two develop a deep and intimate rapport despite guarding their true identities. But down-to-earth movie star Graham Larkin is certain that Ellie is someone special, and he lobbies to shoot his new movie in “the middle of nowhere, Maine,” Ellie’s hometown. Ellie is shocked to learn who Graham is, and she is anything but thrilled by the prospect of dating a teen heartthrob. Meanwhile, the paparazzi trailing Graham threaten to upturn the quiet, carefully constructed life Ellie and her mother have nurtured to smooth over a high-profile secret. The shared third-person narration lends a quiet insight into these two likable characters whose histories and flaws are relatable and fully fleshed out. The blend of celebrity glitz and small-town coziness gives this summer love story a pleasant frame, and it will leave readers wishing for more time with this endearing couple as the sun rises on their last morning together. Grades 8-11. --Heather Booth

Beautiful Writing, Underwhelming Story
By Andrea T
This is What Happy Looks Like was surprising, to me. I read a review yesterday by Jen YA Romantics, that described it as a mix of You've Got Mail, Notting Hill, and What a Girl Wants. That's about as accurate of a description as I could ever hope to come up with.

What was surprising for me about This is What Happy Looks Like is that it was, hmm... underwhelming. Don't get me wrong, it was sweet, and charming. I liked the characters, but there was not a lot to keep me hooked. In fact, I put this down for three days because I got swept away in another series that was full of fun and passion and angst, highs and lows. And in comparison, this was just nice.

Smith is obviously an extremely talented author. I absolutely adored The Statistical Probability of Love at First Sight. I raved about it to all my friends for months, and credit it with making me love a boy named Oliver. Maybe that has caused me to judge this book a little too much. And though I liked Ellie and Graham, their portrayals were just sort of flat. I understood were they were coming from with their feelings and questions about their lives, but they didn't feel fully developed. I almost felt a true attachment to them and their story at certain points, the epic was just within reach, but then the story would move along and the feeling went away. Also, I would have like a least a smidge more resolution in the ending.

This Is What Happy Looks Like was a good, if underwhelming, story. I did like it, but will also say that I never fell in love with it. And I wouldn't discourage anyone from reading it, but I would also say to maybe be prepared to not be swept away.

THIS IS WHAT AMAZING LOOKS LIKE!!!
By Fly to the Sky
So to start off, I just want to put it out there that I am NOT a big fan of contemporaries. I mean there are a few authors in that category that I will read, but normally I'll stick to the more Sci-Fi and Fantasy aspects. Well Jennifer E. Smith is one of those authors I can't get enough of. A few months ago when I read The Statistical Probability of Love at First Sight, I fell in love with her writing style. So when I heard that she had a new book coming out with an amazing premise, I just had to pre-order it. And then I had to stay up until four in the morning to read it. (yeah, I'm the kind of person who does that, BUT only if I don't have school.) My point is This is What Happy Looks Like does not disappoint.

THE PROS

1.) The E-mails. The e-mails were funny and it was a great concept, although it might have made a bit more sense if they were texts. (More people text than use e-mail.)

2.) Dual POV. In The Statistical Probability of Love at First Sight, there was only Hadley's perspective, but in this book, both Ellie and Graham get there say.

3.) Ellie and Graham. I just loved bot of them. They come off as really shy around each other and it's really cute. I love Ellie's back story and why she has a reason for not wanting to be with Graham. So many times you read a book and the main characters are kept apart for stupid reasons, but here, it made sense.

4.) Graham's pig Wilbur.... You never actually get to meet him. :'( But I did think Graham's relationship with his pig was insanely sweet!

5.) The cover! I just LOVE the cover. It's just so pretty.

6.) Jennifer E. Smith's writing style. I've already said this, but I just love how she writes the story, she actually makes you feel connected.

7.) I loved the beginning. It was so funny how Graham was so let down about "Ellie" because the whole time I sat there laughing and thinking, "I know something you don't!!'

8.) I loved Graham and Ellie's jokes, like the whoopie pie one and also there funny stories. =D

THE CONS

1.) I would have liked to see more of the E-mails between Graham and Ellie before the author actually introduced them into the book.

OVERALL

In all, I really enjoyed this book. Jennifer E. Smith somehow manages to make her novels feel so real, like what is happening in them is totally possible. I though this book was a fantastic read.

WOULD I READ THIS BOOK: YES!!!!!!!
WOULD I BUY THIS BOOK: NO DOUBT ABOUT IT!!!!
WOULD I RECOMMEND THIS BOOK: To lovers of contemporaries or for people looking for a light funny read.

WILL I READ MORE BY THIS AUTHOR: YES!!!

Angieville: THIS IS WHAT HAPPY LOOKS LIKE
By Angela Thompson
Jennifer E. Smith gets the cutest covers in the world, doesn't she? I picked up The Statistical Probability of Love at First Sight almost entirely on the merits of its adorable cover alone. And when I saw the cover for THIS IS WHAT HAPPY LOOKS LIKE, I immediately began daydreaming about how happy they would look next to each other on my shelves--an activity I engage in all too often when it comes to books of a feather. And given how much I loved The Statistical Probability of Love at First Sight, I felt that my feelings for her next novel were sort of a foregone conclusion. Especially when you take into account the much-billed You've Got Mail meets Notting Hill premise. I ask you--who can resist the wild potential of that setup? No one. That is who. But one of the things I loved the most about The Statistical Probability of Love at First Sight was how it packed so much more of a punch that its name or cover suggested. It was deeper and wider than its slim-ish page count and 24-hour time period foretold. I don't think I realized going into this one how much I was counting on the same thing being true of it.

Ellie O'Neill and Graham Larkin don't know each other at all. Ellie is the daughter of an ex-waitress turned shop owner in the backwoods town of Henley, Maine. Graham is an all American kid turned movie star from California. The two have nothing at all in common (except perhaps a love for Charlotte's Web) until Graham mistypes a single email address, hits send, and it winds up in Ellie's inbox way on the other side of the country. His misplaced missive ignites what evolves into a lively correspondence in which the two teenagers exchange jokes, detail their day-to-day goings on, their hopes, their dreams, and ruminate on what "happy" looks like. Neither of them quite realize how much the burgeoning virtual friendship means to them until the location for Graham's upcoming rom-com falls through, and he finds himself suggesting Henley as a possible alternative. And with that one act, he somewhat wittingly, somewhat unwittingly sets the two of them on a collision course. The results are both enlightening and unexpectedly fraught as Graham finds a kind of home in the most unlikely of places and Ellie grapples with a secret she promised never to tell. Soon Graham's time in Henley will be up. And where will they go from there?

THIS IS WHAT HAPPY LOOKS LIKE has a great deal of charm going for it. Graham and Ellie are eminently likable. The lovable happenstance of their "meeting" is difficult to resist. And the small-town Maine setting is one I've enjoyed in the past and that is once again used to great effect here. Smith's writing is capable and occasionally lovely, if not as consistently so as it was in The Statistical Probability of Love at First Sight. One of the lovelier observations here:

"No matter how long it's been or how far you've drifted, no matter how unknowable you might be, there were at least two people in the world whose job it was to see you, to find you, to recognize you and reel you back in. No matter what."

I feel that one of Jennifer E. Smith's real strengths is the upfront, sensitive way in which she depicts families. Her characters' romantic entanglements are not resolved in place of their familial relationships, but as a result of their dealing with them first. Sometimes the one unfolds along with the other, and often they help one another work through their baggage. What I'm saying is their priorities are generally in order, and I dig that about Smith's characters (and her books). Like Hadley, Ellie struggles with father issues. These issues are, in fact, meant to be pivotal to the story. But where Hadley's felt incredibly real and meaningful to me, Ellie's rarely cross the border from the tepid into the profound. So when the plot takes a turn to explore that vein, I felt ambivalent when I should have been riveted. As for Ellie and Graham, I liked them all right. But I never truly fell for them in a way that made me unable to look away. They are both good people. They're good and they're well-intentioned and they're dedicated to achieving their goals for the future. I was happy that they found one another. I wanted them to find a way to be together. I just didn't feel compelled to stick around and watch it happen. They "looked" like happy to me, if you will, but they failed to inspire the real emotion behind the exterior. In the end, THIS IS WHAT HAPPY LOOKS LIKE has all the key elements of a competent, if somewhat bland romantic comedy, but it lacks that certain spark that makes it a keeper.

Review
`A library of recent professional research lies behind this book, and it may well prove to be seminal for future writing. But for all those who are concerned for the Church's mission on the continent (as well as on the islands on its western fringe) this book ought to be required reading - all CofE ordinands included.' The Revd Jonathan Godall, Bishop's Chaplain and Research Officer

`The book deserves a wide readership and its blend of accessibility, empirical rigour, and theoretical sophistication should ensure, that like its predecessor, it becomes a standard text for some time to come.' Journal of Contemporary Religion, vol.16, no.3

`represents a major theoretical contribution to the discourses surrounding religion, identity and the disembedding of culture. An attractive feature is the inclusion of a wide range of scholarly material from non-English speaking sources, making this book both truly European in scope and introducing the reader to significant theoretical developments originating within European sociology.' Journal of Contemporary Religion, vol.16, no.3

`Davie's 'Religion in Britain since 1945' (1994) quickly established itself as a standard teaching text and this successor volume has been awaited with keen anticipation. Davie does not disappoint. The product of impressive scholarship, exhaustively researched and theoretically innovative, this book represents an important addition to our understanding of contemporary religious life.' Journal of Contemporary Religion, vol.16, no.3

`a bold and by no means unsuccessful gesture towards comprehensive coverage of contemporary European religion' Bryan Wilson, The Tablet

`a careful and distinguished analysis of the concept of 'secularisation' as applied to modern Europe ... one of its cardinal virtues is that it throws out diverting hints and implications which a tight theme and the limitations of space will not allow to be explored further.' Rev. Prof. Edward Norman, Church Times 12/01/01.

`Dr Davie's excellence resides in her sensitivity to the slippery nature of her materials. Her summary of the present realations of Church and state in European countries is also especially useful.' Rev. Prof. Edward Norman, Church Times 12/01/01.

A contemporary survey of a continent which is beginning to forget that it once was Christian. The Gospel and Our Culture, Spring 2002

Real Analysis, by N. L. Carothers

This is a course in real analysis directed at advanced undergraduates and beginning graduate students in mathematics and related fields. Presupposing only a modest background in real analysis or advanced calculus, the book offers something to specialists and non-specialists. The course consists of three major topics: metric and normed linear spaces, function spaces, and Lebesgue measure and integration on the line. In an informal style, the author gives motivation and overview of new ideas, while supplying full details and proofs. He includes historical commentary, recommends articles for specialists and non-specialists, and provides exercises and suggestions for further study. This text for a first graduate course in real analysis was written to accommodate the heterogeneous audiences found at the masters level: students interested in pure and applied mathematics, statistics, education, engineering, and economics.

Review
'... extremely well written: very entertaining and motivating.' Adhemar Bultheel, Bulletin of the London Mathematical Society

'The author writes lucidly in a friendly, readable style and he is strong at motivating, anticipating and reviewing the various themes that permeate the text ... The overwhelming impression is that Real analysis was a labour of love for the author, written with a genuine reverence for both its beautiful subject matter and its creators, refiners and teachers down the ages. As such - and high praise indeed - it will sit very happily alongside classics such as Apostol's Mathematical analysis, Royden's Real analysis, Rudin's Real and complex analysis and Hewitt and Stromberg's Real and abstract analysis.' The Mathematical Gazette

Excellent textbook for review, but this is not a first course.
By G. Basilio
In the author's preface, he states that the prerequisites are "one semester of advanced calculus or real analysis at the undergraduate level". So, this book cannot be judged as an 'intro to real analysis'.

I just want to comment on how I have experienced this book. Let me mention that I am using this for self-study after completing a course using Rudin's Principles of Mathematical Analysis (we covered every chapter except Ch. 10 on integration in R^n). I picked this up to review analysis with the goal of covering function spaces and measure theory with more emphasis that Rudin. This book does just that! But, I also wanted a book that stays in R for the Lebesgue measure. Having read the first 3 chapters of Folland, I didn't really think I 'understood' the material even though I could do the exercises (but not without a lot of sweat and coffee). (At one point I felt I became a function: [input] facts, assumptions then [output] proofs, ie hw exercises.) Folland does everything for abstract measures and treats the Lebesgue measure as a corollary.

Having said that, this books hits the spot.

A previous reviewer said this book was informal, unprofessional, and chatty. I do agree with him on that the book is very informal in the exposition and is chatty. I feel that this might be very distracting for those who do not wish to be specialists in analysis, or to those who are seeing analysis for the first time. However, for someone who has finished, say Baby Rudin, this book IS AMAZING. His chatty 'foreshadowing' is the best part, since by now you are trying to see the 'big picture'. In this respect, the chattiness tells of the shortcomings of the previous theory and points one to the right questions to ask.

I think this book shines for the purpose of an intermediate course between Baby Rudin and graduate real analysis ala Folland. As such, the exercises are at the perfect level and include standard, important, and interesting results and extensions. I don't think this book is rigorous enough for a real course at the graduate level, however.

A final note, the editorial (why?)'s placed throughout do get annoying but I feel they make sure you do not take results for granted, an all too common habit when reading advanced math.

Highly Recommended
By Indikos
I highly recommend this text, especially for self-study.
This book is like taking a course one who loves the subject and knows it very well.
And what is more, she wants to communicate her knowledge to you.
She has anticipated your difficulties and is prepared to guide you.
The material is well motivated; the historical asides help you understand and appreciate the material even more.
There are a lot good exercises.
One caveat is that analysis is on R not R^n.
The material is pitched at the senior level.
I wish I had this book when I was studying this subject.

Completely revised and updated, this new version of the AAOP Guidelines educates readers on the procedures of evidence-based assessment, diagnosis, and management of orofacial pain conditions based on the latest scientific knowledge. While the structure of the previous version has been maintained, this book offers evidence-based concepts where available and reflects many significant changes in the field of orofacial pain. For example, an entire chapter is now devoted to cervical disorders to emphasize the close relationships between some orofacial pain disorders and cervical pain disorders and to cast greater attention on their differences and similarities. Because they constitute a major part of orofacial pain and affect so many, temporomandibular disorders are the primary topic of several chapters as well as a major focus of the chapter of classification. Other important topics covered in detail include neuropathic pain conditions, odontogenic pain, and mucogingival disorders. This long-awaited edition arms clinicians with new insights and procedures for assessing, diagnosing, and managing patients who present with symptoms of orofacial pain.
