Agree - one of the best books on world politics

My wife, actually attended courses with Organski at U of Michigan and she kept his book and passed it to me. Very clear and insightful framework for understanding the dynamics of the rise and fall of great powers. My edition was 1968 and Organski accurately layed out the likely evolution of the Soviet Union, China, EU and the US. Excellent background to the tensions now taking place in E Europe and the way China is engaging the world as it grows in economic power. Without prejudice, outlines the challenges that totalitarian and party-dominated governments present to democracies. Really a must read!

This book was first published in 1958 and predicted, with amazing clarity, the future changes in the world. This book is an update and was published in 1969. Dr. A.F.K. Organski came up with the fundamental theories which explain about how nations change over time. He explains the causes of war and how countries evolve over time. It is the complete explanation of how the world works. In my opinion it is the best book ever written !!!!!!!

About the Author
Henry Martin is Professor of Music at Rutgers University--the country's only program that grants a degree in jazz scholarship. He has enjoyed a dual career as an award-winning composer-pianist and a music theorist specializing in jazz and the Western tonal tradition. Albany Records released his SELECTED PIANO MUSIC CD in 2010, and in 2004 Bridge Records released his CD PRELUDES AND FUGUES, with Martin performing. He is coeditor of the ANNUAL REVIEW OF JAZZ STUDIES, and his books include CHARLIE PARKER AND THEMATIC IMPROVISATION, COUNTERPOINT, and ESSENTIAL JAZZ: THE FIRST 100 YEARS, 2e.

Keith Waters is Associate Professor of Music Theory at the University of Colorado at Boulder. He has written extensively on jazz improvisation and analysis. A jazz pianist, he has performed in concerts, jazz festivals, and clubs throughout the United States, Europe, and Russia. Prof. Waters has recorded with VSOP Records, and his playing has been a featured topic in JAZZ PLAYER magazine. Among his recent recordings is a Chet Baker tribute with former Baker sideman Phil Urso and West Coast trumpeter Carl Saunders. The current chair of the Jazz Special Interest Group of the Society for Music Theory, he just completed a book on the studio recordings of Miles Davis' second great quintet.

A terrible book, for so many reasons...

How do you write a "100 years of jazz history" book, and not include Buddy Rich or Joe Pass?!? Really?! Arguably the world's greatest jazz drummer ever (or greatest drummer, period) and one of the best jazz guitarists ever... that's almost criminal. And where's Victor Wooten?

I have many other gripes about this book, but those are two of the big ones for me. The writer also omitted many famous female jazz artists, and didn't even really bother to include them on the history 'timelines' throughout the book. Sexist, much? At the same time, he manages to mention the Rolling Stones, the Doors, etc... because yeah, they're so jazzy!

I hate this book, hehe. It's also just not written very well, in my opinion. At least I get to watch the Ken Burns Jazz series as part of the curriculum... unlike this book, that series was actually done very well (and by people who actually knew what they were talking about).

At least I bought it used for $30. Even that seems expensive.

Great Jazz Overview

Good coverage of jazz concepts. Includes jazz history, biographies, great listening guides, 6-page overview of jazz music basics, glossary, lists of videos, albums, books. Visually really nice. The best overview of jazz that I've seen. The downsides are that it's expensive, and that the included CD doesn't have the audio recordings on it; it's an 'audio primer' of extremely short snippets. Buy the CDs of the 'listening guide' musical selections separately.

Pleasantly surprised.

I purchased the First 100 years of Jazz as a class requirement. I was not really a fan of jazz until I heard this CD. I really enjoyed the variety of jazz choices. Great introduction into the world of jazz. I highly recommend this for anyone that is open to all styles of music.

Loved it

I have bought many books from amazon but this is the first time I felt compelled to submit a review of a book. Outnumbered is a quick read and it gives a refreshing, unique perspective from an individual who stands so boldly and courageously in what she believes in. As a grad student surrounded by a group of "tolerant scholars", I was inspired and encouraged by Jedediah's responses and reactions to these encounters. I highly recommend this book, no matter what your political affiliation is.

I have to applaud Jedediah Bila for standing up for her beliefs, even in the face of what is a seemingly overwhelming opponent (I use that term somewhat loosely as we are all Americans). I have watched her on FNC for about a year now, I would guess and I always enjoy her opinions, whatever the topic and I admire her for not taking an abrasively adversarial stance, instead being forceful but respectful. I like that.

This book is not so much a platform for her sociopolitical beliefs but rather an experience of the time leading up to the 2008 election and after Obama was sworn in to the Office of President, ending in March of that year, with a brief update in our current year. It is filled with episodes of how people she encountered through the day reacted to her Palin pin, or how she doesn't look like a conservative or how her 'friends' reacted to her coming out as a conservative. I found those very revealing and, sometimes, very sad.

It is basically a diary and it is interesting how often during that time politics played a huge role in our lives. Miss Bila relays that in a casual, effective way, sometimes funny (the restribution of muscle tone was hilarious!), always interesting in her daily adventures, but I was really quite shocked at how many teachers used their positions to persuade their students to think along a very specific political line, mostly Democrat. I am glad my teachers did not do that. Miss Bila clearly wants school to be a process where the kids learn how to make up their own minds about the issues and not just be told what to say and what to think, ala Orwell's 1984. Though she is no longer teaching, she does give me hope for the future teachers in America.

If I have any complaint, and why I took off half a star, it is because the book is too short. I wanted to read more. When I was finished, I felt somewhat disappointed that it had ended already. I guess that is a criticism but also a compliment, in a way.

A Pea In A Huge Pod: She has to be weird

I loved the book. And at the same time think "This lady is weird." Weird in the sense that she has to be if she remains in such a hostile place to anything conservative. And she definitely is conservative. Weird in that she lives among so many "progressives" that call on everyone to be tolerant - except they are not, unless you agree with their socialistic world view . Miss Bila is a great writer and very witty. This short book reflects that...my only complaint.....I wanted to read more. I highly recommend it....what are you waiting for....get it!

The author: Jim Cooling has had many years experience in the area of real-time embedded systems, including electronic, software and system design, project management, consultancy, education and course development. He has published extensively on the subject, his books covering many aspects of embedded-systems work such as real-time interfacing, programming, software design and software engineering. Currently he is a partner in Lindentree Associates (which he formed in 1998), providing consultancy and training for real-time embedded systems.

It is a complete book to understand RTOS. Totally recommended.
Be aware that it is not a step by step guide to writing a RTOS in any programming lenguage, although it includes some pseudo-code to understand the fundamentals.

Pay attention to the dimensions!

I'm not going to comment on the content, because I already knew what that was (ordered this as a replacement for a lost copy). I do want to point out that (though it's my own fault), I was surprised by how tiny this book was...the size of a tract, maybe. Just a word to the wise!

WONDERFULLY ENIGMATIC ROMANCE

How can you fall in love and not know it?

According to Hugh the Marquis of Aldeborough and Miss Frances Hanwell it was easy.

Hugh is living with a lot of guilt over the death of his beloved but rascally brother, Richard. He was a soldier brought home to take over the estates and welfare of his family.

He has a younger brother, Matthew and sister, Juliet and of course an obnoxious mother who wishes to run everyone's lives.

This leads to his immoderate indulgence of drink and a cynical attitude. Which of course leads to his introduction to Miss Frances Hanwell, the niece of one of his neighbors.

Miss Frances, who is treated like a servant and poor relation receives abuse from her "guardian" uncle. She hopes to inherit a small pittance to live on when she attains her majority.

Well one thing leads to another causing her to hide away in the Marquis carriage and to suffer his drunken advances.

Oh yeah, a marriage of convenience is in the offing for one reason or another, [grin] you gotta hear their reasons!

Marriage, danger, eventually the begetting of an heir and scars lead to a tale of Regency romance that is heart warming - intrigueing and oh yes, the scurvy villans - hilarious escapes and too much protection of female sensibilities and lack of communications that always lead to trouble.

HIGHLY RECOMMENDED - very enjoyable read with tender sex.

Handles "The Misunderstanding" Well

How in the world did I miss this author? While certain unmentionable authors are garnering all the press and writing prochronistic Regency drivel, this one is the real deal. Her eye for historical detail (she was a history teacher) seems quite good and her writing talent is light years ahead of the "popular" writers.

Yes, it is about "the misunderstanding" which so many decry as overused but the author gives solid reasons why the two protagantists don't resolve it easily. The heroine was abused and thinks like a victim of abuse while the hero is a typical male (which means he doesn't think like a femaile, ladies), clueless at times and scrambling to get it right.

I will be making it a point to read all of her published works based on this first entry.

Marriage of Inconvienance?

In a desperate attempt to get away from her abuse relatives and the prospect of a forced marriage, Frances hides in the coach of the Marquis of Aldeborough. The drunken Marquis discovers the girl and mistakes her for a common kitchen wench. In his inebriated state, he makes advances towards her without the thought of any reprecussions. In the morning he is shocked to discover the girl is in fact a gentlewomen whom he unfortunately compromised by bringing her to his home. Frances wants nothing but to get to her relatives in London and beg for their assistance, certainly not to stay here with the Marquis and accept his ludicris marriage proposal. The Marquis sees no other option, he unwilling compromised the girl by having her unchaperoned in his presence for the night and will not besmirch his honor. Thus the only possible conclusion is marriage. Frances is vehemently against this and after many agruements and an attempted escape does she resign to her fate of marriage to the Marquis.

This is only the first fifty pages, what follows involves a story of lies, attempted murder, jealously (LOTS!), betrayal and many interesting twists and turns.

I liked this book, just didn't love it. I just couldn't love the Marquis or Frances for that matter. Their relationship was a bit cold and stayed that way till almost the very end. I actually would have rated the book 3 stars if not for the last 20 pages. The way they acted towards eachother gave me no indication that they were actually in love other than to state the fact in their own minds. Many of the actions of the H/H were not ones that one would ascribe to two people who were in love. They totally neglected to take into account on how the other party would interpret their actions. The loves scenes were lacking as well and I don't mean in frequency. They weren't described in detail enough and mostly lacked female satisfaction (this doesn't make any sense since the Marqius is supposed to be know as a great lover).

Overall, I recommend the book. Not a great one, but worth reading.

Easy Read

Each new class, I need a new book. My prior experience is that the text books are dry information and data providing tools. This text actually seems to have a higher interest level. Of course, the topics of relations and communication is relevant to anyone. Yet, the way this is written shows the authors took time to relate, using their best interpersonal communication skills in writing, to attract the reader to continue on rather than simply using it as a reference to answer a few questions for a course.

This book was required for class. This is a great book to read whether or not taking this class. It gives a comprehensive understanding the development in our society and what to expect of people and how people see you as a person. You will also understand how misinterpretation can start and add to future misunderstanding without clarification. I recommend this book to other students.

You must read Mortimer Alder if you have any desire to reform the working of our federal government.
Whole the book was written for bicentennial of 1976, the teachings on the Declaration of Independence, the Constitution and the Gettysburg Address are all applicable for today.

It is amazing that this man is not read with the same respect as Jung or Freud. His viewpoint is a view from a very unique point that needs to be considered if not revered by everyone.

Better than Man's Search for Meaning

I liked this book even more that "Man's Search for Meaning." Its incredible that this was published in 1946, months after Frankl was liberated from a concentration camp. His writing is lucid and I think poignant where he elucidates the relationship between psychiatry and theology. There are some points I disagree with: I think he stresses that the divine, or numinous, bears no relation to the material and factual. I would argue that our sense of the divine, as well as conscience, are both products of the connections between our minds and our bodies and between individuals and their social surroundings. Interestingly, Frankl uses the example of the human navel, which symbolizes the connection between mother and child as a metaphor of transcendence, but fails to see in his use of this metaphor a potential reference to the actual sense of the numinous, as well as to conscience. Although his writing is open enough to allow for this possibility, he stops short of examining the full significance of the connection to the mother, the intrauterine environment in which consciousness first develops a sense of itself. There is a lot more to be said about this book and Frankl's contributions to our understanding of human behavior. In "Entheogens, Society & Law: Towards a Politics of Consciousness, Autonomy and Responsibility" Daniel Waterman and Casey William Hardison have explored the notion of response-ability implicit in this work in detail.
