American Education: A History, by Wayne J. Urban, Jennings L. Wagoner

"American Education: A History" presents the history of American education from precolonial times to the present in a comprehensive, engaging manner. Balanced and well written, the text provides an objective overview of historical events alongside thoughtful analysis and integration as it presents each major period in the development of American education against the broader backdrop of national and world events. Each chapter is tightly linked to the preceding and succeeding chapters so that the story of American education unfolds in a seamless manner. This is the first text to explore Native American traditions (including education) prior to Colonization. It also offers very strong, ongoing coverage of minorities and women; exceptional coverage of education in the nineteenth century in the southern states; and a noteworthy three-chapter cluster (chapters 6, 7, and 8) describing the making of the modern school system before, during, and after the Progressive Era. This edition includes the addition of political cartoons, annotated suggestions for further reading, more comprehensive coverage of John Dewey, and a thoroughly reorganized and updated recent history of education (Chapter 12).

Great text!
By Tom Brey
History can be a tough sell to many people as many have experienced the mundane books which are often very dry. This book isn't like that, it offers a fresh view of American history from a perspective of education and how it has evolved. An eye opening experience and objective point of view. The summaries at the end of the chapters may help some preferring a brief overview to stress the key points in a timely fashion. I'm currently a doctoral student in Educational Administration and found this book to be an excellent resource as well. The fold out timeline that comes with the new book is full color and shows many of the individuals that are cited in the book which aids in memory retention for those visual learners out there.

Helpful social history view of education in the U.S.
By L. A. Dameshek
As a masters candidate in Educational Psychology, I found this to be a helpful text to review the history of the educational system in the U.S. The author definitely leaned toward the liberal side, but he was fairly even-handed in his presentation of the people, social and economic conditions that have impacted the organization and delivery of education in this country. The book was easy to read and full of good references to primary sources of material for further review.

Too Biased
By teachersupreme
As a pretty liberal person I was shocked at how much I hated this book. By the time I reached chapter 9 I would have preferred to get a root canal than finish this book, yet I did manage to finish it. Yes, everyone has a point of view and yes it is nearly impossible to be completely unbiased. But, having said that the authors could have at least tried to show more than the very narrow minded opinions than they did. Or, actually less would have been more. Just give me the facts and let me draw my own conclusions. This book tried its hardest to make itself "interesting" by inserting colorful adjectives that it was hard to tell what occurred and what was factual. Having said all this, if you have to read it for a course the kindle edition is formatted quite well, and I pity your souls.

From the Back Cover
I died on January 18, 1989.
Immediately after I died, I went straight to heaven. While I was in heaven, a Baptist pastor came on the accident scene. Even though he knew I was dead, he rushed to my lifeless body and prayed for me. At least ninety minutes after the EMTs pronounced me dead, God answered that man's prayers. I returned to earth. This is my story.

90 Minutes in Heaven
By E. Oneto
I never buy these kinds of books. I have always viewed them as a type of preying on believers or , at best, a sleazy attempt to cash in on faith. This book was different. I read the title and synopsis and passed over it many times but something kept drawing me back to this book. I didn't know why at the time, but I had to buy this book.

I loved it from the very first page. It has a ring of truth. Most of the book is about what happened to Mr. Piper after his experience in heaven and during his long, painful recovery. I bought many copies and gave them to family and friends, urging them to read it as I believe it has the power to transform lives.

About a month after I 1st read this book my son was killed in Iraq. I now know that God was preparing me for what was to come and not be afraid but be joyful that my son is with Him in an indescribly beautiful place, in His presence. I have a peace of mind I NEVER would have known if I had not read this book. I will be forever grateful for this.

I couldn't put it down!
By Bonnie M. Traylor
Written in straight-forward, simple style without a lot of "religionese," Don Piper has told the story of his devastating accident, his brief time in heaven and his return to a life full of pain and questions. I read it cover-to-cover in two hours and then loaned out my copy. I would recommend this book to just about anybody -- to those with questions about faith, questions about prayer, questions about life and death and pain which we all face to some extent.

His descriptions of heaven are human ones -- simple, not overly poetic or grandiose, just those of someone who experienced the indescribable and then tried to describe it. I loved the descriptions of the incredible heavenly music and I get the feeling that vast choirs and heightened senses await us there. And despite the incredible experience, Piper found it too personal, too private, and too intimate to share with anyone for over a year after his accident. I'm so glad he found the courage to do so.

I also love the honesty with which he describes his pain and depression and the inevitable questions that we must face when we have close encounters with the Almighty. The God we meet is often not the one we expected, and while we can't understand why God does what he does, we can no longer deny this God we don't understand. And while we hold these two things together, our lives are changed and grace is showered down amid the ruins of what we thought was important to us.

A simply-told story of the greatest mystery of all -- you HAVE to read this book!!

Just enough to make it real
By L. Petersen
As I glanced through other reviews of this book, I noticed many of the negative reviews voiced the same issue -- "there wasn't enough about his experience in Heaven". But that's what confirmed its authenticity to me along with his self-admitted inability to describe it. I'm confident Reverand Piper conveyed exactly what he experienced and that it wasn't embellished or enhanced merely to satisfy our earthly desires for more information. A lesser author would have done so to sell more books! His experience in Heaven was the most intriguing part of the book, but of greater value was what he did with that experience as well as the mental and physical challenges following his accident. The Worthing Saga, by Orson Scott Card

It was a miracle of science that permitted human beings to live, if not forever, then for a long, long time. Some people, anyway. The rich, the powerful--they lived their lives at the rate of one year every ten. Some created two societies: that of people who lived out their normal span and died, and those who slept away the decades, skipping over the intervening years and events. It allowed great plans to be put in motion. It allowed interstellar Empires to be built.

It came near to destroying humanity.

After a long, long time of decadence and stagnation, a few seed ships were sent out to save our species. They carried human embryos and supplies, and teaching robots, and one man. The Worthing Saga is the story of one of these men, Jason WOrthing, and the world he found for the seed he carried.

Orson Scott Card is "a master of the art of storytelling" (Booklist), and The Worthing Saga is a story that only he could have written.

The Day of Pain

In many places in the Peopled Worlds, the pain came suddenly in the midst of the day’s labor. It was as if an ancient and comfortable presence left them, one that they had never noticed until it was gone, and no one knew what to make of it at first, though all knew at once that something had changed deep at the heart of the world. No one saw the brief flare in the star named Argos; it would be years before astronomers would connect the Day of Pain with the End of Worthing. And by then the change was done, the worlds were broken, and the golden age was over.
In Lared’s village, the change came while they slept. That night there were no shepherds in their dreams. Lared’s little sister, Sala, awoke screaming in terror that Grandma was dead, Grandma is dead!
Lared sat up in his truckle bed, trying to dispel his own dreams, for in them he had seen his father carry Grandma to the gave--but that had been long ago, hadn’t it? Father stumbled from the wooden bedstead where he and Mother slept. Not since Sala had been weaned had anyone cried out in the night. Was she hungry?
“Grandma died tonight, like a fly in the fire she died!”
Like a squirrel in the fox’s teeth, thought Lared. Like a lizard in the cat’s mouth, trembling.
“Of course she’s dead,“ Father said, “but not tonight.” He took her in his vast blacksmith’s arms and held her. “Why do you weep now, when Grandma has been dead for such a long time?” But Sala wept on, as if the grief were great and new.
Then Lared looked at Grandma’s old bed. “Father,“ he whispered. Again, “Father.” For there lay her corpse, still new, still stiffening, though Lared so clearly remembered her burial long ago.
Father laid Sala back in her truckle bed, where she burrowed down against the woven straw side, in order not to watch. Lared watched, though, as his father touched the straw tick beside his old mother’s body. “Not cold yet,“ he murmured. Then he cried out in fear and agony, “Mother!” Which woke all the sleepers, even the travelers in the room upstairs; they all came into the sleeping room.
“Do you see it!” cried Father. “Dead a year, at least, and here’s her body not yet cold in her own bed!”
“Dead a year!” cried the old clerk, who had arrived late in the afternoon yesterday, on a donkey. “Nonsense! She served the soup last night. Don’t you remember how she joked with me that if my bed was too cold, your wife would come up and warm it, and if it was too warm, shewould sleep with me?”
Lared tried to sort out his memories. “I remember that, but I remember that she said that long, long ago, and yet I remember she said it to you, and I never saw you before last night.”
“I buried you!” Father cried, and then he knelt at Grandma’s bed and wept. “I buried you, and forgot you, and here you are to grieve me!”
Weeping. It was an unaccustomed sound in the village of Flat Harbor, and no one knew what to do about it. Only hungry infants made such cries, and so Mother said, “Elmo, will you eat something? Let me fetch you something to eat.”
“No!” shouted Elmo. “Don’t you see my mother’s dead?” And he caught his wife by the arm and flung her roughly away. She fell over the stool and struck her head against the table.
This was worse than the corpse lying in the bed, stiff as a dried-out bird. For never in Lared’s life had he seen one human being do harm to another. Father too was aghast at his own temper. “Thano, Thanalo, what have I done?” He scarcely knew how to comfort her as she lay weeping softly on the floor. No one had needed comfort in all their lives. To all the others, Father said, “I was so angry. I have never been so angry before, and yet what did she do? I’ve never felt such a rage, and yet she did me no harm!”
Who could answer him? Something was bitterly wrong with the world, they could see that; they had all felt anger in the past, but till now something had always come between the thought and the act, and calmed them. Now, tonight, that calm was gone. They could feel it in themselves, nothing soothing their fear, nothing telling them worldlessly, All is well.
Sala raised her head above the edge of her bed and said, “The angels are gone, Mama. No one watches us anymore.”
Mother got up from the floor and stumbled over her daughter. “Don’t be foolish, child. There are no angels, except in dreams.”
There is a lie in my mind, Lared said to himself. The traveler came last night, and Grandma spoke to him just as he said, and yet my memory is twisted, for I remember the traveler speaking yesterday, but Grandma answering long ago. Something has bent my memories, for I remember grieving at her graveside, and yet her grave has not been dug.
Mother looked up at Father in awe. “My elbow still hurts, where it struck the floor,“ she said. “It still hurts very much.”
A hurt that lasted! Who had heard of such a thing! And when she lifted her arm, there was a raw and bleeding scrape on it.
“Have I killed you?” asked Father, wonderingly.
“No,“ said Mother. “I don’t think so.”
“Then why does it bleed?”
The old clerk trembled and nodded and his voice quivered as he spoke. “I have read the books of ancient times,“ he began, and all eyes turned to him. “I have read the books of ancient times, and in them the old ones spoke of wounds that bleed like slaughtered cattle, and great griefs when the living suddenly are dead, and anger that turns to blows among people. But that was long, long ago, when men were still animals, and God was young and inexperienced.”
“What does this mean, then?” asked Father. He was not a bookish man, and so even more than Lared he thought that men who knew books had answers.
“I don’t know,“ said the clerk. “But perhaps it means that God has gone away, or that he no longer cares for us.”
Lared studied the corpse of Grandma, lying on her bed. “Or is he dead?” Lared asked.
“How can God die?” the old clerk asked with withering scorn. “He had all the power in the universe.”
“Then doesn’t he have the power to die if he wants to?”
“Why should I speak with children of things like this?” The clerk got up to go upstairs, and the other travelers took that as a signal to return to bed.
But Father did not go to bed: he knelt by his old mother’s body until daybreak. And Lared also did not sleep, because he was trying to remember what he had felt inside himself yesterday that he did not feel now, for something was strange in the way his own eyes looked out upon the world, and yet he could not remember how it was before. Only Sala and Mother slept, and they slept together in Mother’s and Father’s bed.
Before dawn, Lared got up and walked over to his mother, and saw that a scab had formed on her arm, and the bleeding had stopped. Comforted, he dressed himself and went out to milk the ewe, which was near the end of its milk. Every bit of milk was needed for the cheese press and the butter churn--winter was coming, and this morning, as the cold breeze whipped at Lared’s hair, this morning he looked to winter with dread. Until today he had always looked at the future like a cow looking at the pasture, never imagining drought or snow. Now it was possible for old women to be found dead in their beds. Now it was possible for Father to be angry and knock Mother to the floor. Now it was possible for Mother to bleed like an animal. And so winter was more than just a season of inactivity. It was the end of hope.
The ewe perked up at something, a sound perhaps that Lared was too human to hear. He stopped milking and looked up, and saw in the western sky a great light, which hovered in the air like a star that had lost its bearings and needed help to get back home. Then the light sank down below the level of the trees across the river, and it was gone. Lared did not know at first what it might be. Then he remembered the word starshipfrom school and wondered. Starships did not come to Flat Harbor, or even to this continent, or even, more than once a decade, to this world. There was nothing here to carry away to somewhere else, nothing lacking here that only other worlds could possibly supply. Why, then, would a starship come here now? Don’t be a fool, Lared, he told himself. It was a shooting star, but on this strange morning you made too much of it, because you are afraid.
At dawn, Flat Harbor came awake, and others gradually made the discovery that had come to Lared’s family in the night. They came, as they always did in cold weather, to Elmo’s house, with its great table and indoor kitchen. They were not surprised to find that Elmo had not yet built up the fire in his forge.
“I scalded myself on the gruel this morning,“ said Dinno, Mother’s closest friend. She held up the smoothed skin of her fingers for admiration. “Hurts like it was still in the fire. Good God,“ she said.
Mother had her own wounds, but she chose not to tell that tale. “When that old clerk went to leave this morning, his donkey kicked him square in the belly, and now he’s upstairs. Too much hurt to travel, he says. Threw up his breakfast.”
There were a score of minor, careless injuries, and by noon most people were walking more carefully, carrying out their tasks more slowly. Not a one of them but had some injury. Omber, one of the diggers of Grandma’s grave, crushed his foot with a pick, and it bled for a long, long time; now, whi...

Card will grip your imagination and intellect
By Brian Melendez
Orson Scott Card is perhaps the greatest living science-fiction writer still writing. This book is prime evidence.
The "saga" weaves together two series of short stories that Card developed, in parallel and in tandem, over serveral years and in several incarnations. The core series concerns an interstellar human empire (loosely modeled, as Card freely acknowledges, after the First Galactic Empire in Asimov's "Foundation" series) that revolves around the drug "somec," which lets one live life a few years or a year or a day at a time, skipping over the intervening years. (The "somec" stories were originally published in earlier collections, "Capitol" and "Hot Sleep.") One's economic and social status depends on one's level of somec, which determines how quickly or slowly one moves through not only life, but history. The first "somec" story, "Skipping Stones," sets the scene: two boyhood friends take two paths, one becoming an artist who lives out his life in ordinary time, the other an entrepreneur who spaces out his life for as long as he can afford. The artist pictures himself immersed in life: "I like to swim. It gets me wet. It wears me out." But his wealthy friend dips into the world only from time to time, and the world moves on without him; when he dips back into the world, it is for him as if only a moment has passed since he last landed there, but his friend has been living a full life and the world has been living a whole history between his awakenings.
The other series concerns the "Forest of Waters," home of a community exiled from the stagnating somec-driven universe, guided at first by a godlike ancestor with paranormal psychic powers. While the somec stories are subtle parables, these other stories are much more direct inquiries into pain, suffering, and their role not only in human society but in a universe watched over by an aware deity.
Card describes this book as "the most structurally complex yet thematically unified of my works of fiction." The "thematic unity" that weaves together all the book's multifaceted stories is indeed masterful, easily surpassing Card's "The Folk of the Fringe," a masterpiece in its own right. "The Worthing Saga" is a compelling read, one that will grip your imagination and intellect long after you have finished it. I reread it every few years, and enjoy it just as much with each reacquaintance.

After the Ender series, simply not what I expected
By Phil Morgan
Well written, but jumpy (multiple story lines interestingly blended).
I liked the stories in this saga, just not overwhelmingly so. I enjoyed the Ender Wiggins sagas much more!

About the Author
Sandra Marton, a best-selling American author, wrote her first novel when she was seven. It was a romance, which probably says a lot about fate and the mysterious paths that sometimes lead us through life. By the time she was ten, she'd read Gone With The Wind even though that famous scene where Rhett carries Scarlett up the stairs puzzled the heck out of her. / Sandra loved school, hated gym, and graduated high school at 15 ½. More important, she fell head over heels in love that same year and finally figured out what that scene in Gone With The Wind was all about. / At university, Sandra studied Creative Writing. She also studied to be an elementary school teacher because everyone knew you couldn't possibly earn your living as a writer. Life got very busy. Sandra married the boy she'd met at 15 ½, began teaching, became a mom, stopped teaching, took in every stray cat and dog she found and eventually ran for public office and won, but she never forgot she had once dreamed of being a writer. In what little spare time she had, she wrote poems and short stories. The poems were dark and murky. The short stories were dark but not quite as murky. She even sold some of them but she knew she hadn't yet found the kind of stories she really wanted to write. / And then, one day, she thought, I wonder if I could write a romance novel⠦ / So she wrote one and sent it into the world where it was rejected in some places and given encouragement in others until her husband, that boy she'd fallen crazy in love with so many years before, took matters into his own hands and mailed her book to Harlequin Presents. / Seventy-five plus books later, he still loves to remind her of that.

A favorite for Sheikh's lovers!
By Yadel C
The sparks are in from the beginning. First you have a professional and succesful heroine, Megan; who encounters a gender discrimination at her work place. Second, she confronts the hero in the story, Qasim, whom she blames for all the bad luck of the day, at the end you have a sizzling first encounter that was outrageous as it was funny.

This story is a must to be read at once. Grab your book, go away, and prepare to enjoy a romantic story, with an excellent plot, and the appereance of your favorite O'Conells.

This one includes everything: handsome man, passionate heroine, well written dialogues, fights, laughs, love, passion... i could go on forever. Just take the pleasure to read it.

Because I hated it. No, that's not true. I liked the hero a lot, the concept was interesting, but the heroine was awful. Imagine the rudest, most ethno-centric, wilfully ignorant cultural snob you can - and you know this chick. Her arrogant refusal to respect the traditions of the country where she was working made her completely unappealing & dislikable. And the chip on her shoulder was so heavy I could hardly lift my kindle.

Two stars instead of one only because of the hero & concept. Definitely not recommended.

Romance Junkies says...
By Sarah W
Sarah at Romance Junkies says: "Sandra Marton has another hit with THE SHEIKH'S CONVENIENT BRIDE. Each story in the O'Connell saga gets better and better and Megan and Qasim's love story is no different. The sparks leap off the page when these two characters are together and it is obvious that they feel more than desire for each other, though they are wary of admitting it. This is a powerful story that examines a woman's role in a country that believes women should be submissive, and though this isn't the main focus of the story by any means, it definitely is examined through Megan. Nevertheless, it is love that makes this story so great, and THE SHEIKH'S CONVENIENT BRIDE is a truly remarkable love story."

Hannah "Harmony" Stewart has lived most of her adult life in the spotlight. It hasn't always been easy. One heartbreak almost ruined her. Some days it's hard to keep a smile on her face and stay positive, but there are a lot of people counting on her to keep it together. Just when it seems like she's at the pinnacle of her career, her life takes a turn. She meets a man who challenges everything she knows about herself and makes her question if the life she's living is for her or for the Nashville machine.

Heavy Metal's bad boy

Hair trigger temper

Struggling to deal with pressure of the industry

Garrett "Reaper" Thompson is tired. Touring and keeping up appearances with his band "Black Friday" is beginning to wear him out. He's ready for a change, ready for something different. When he meets Hannah at an awards show, he knows that she's the one, he knows that he can't live without her.

The problem?

Their own insecurities, their fans, her ex-boyfriend, and the media themselves. Can they look past it all and come through on the other side? For their story - this is only the beginning.

Book #1.5 in the Rockin' Country Series

One Day At A Time

Celebrity Couple.

Perfect in the public eye; imperfect in private.

Perfectly imperfect for each other.

Reaper and Harmony are finally off the road and ready to just be Garrett and Hannah. Excitement turns into fear when they start to learn more about each other. Gone is the glitz and glamour of hotel rooms and living on the road.

Now it's real-life, and they have to learn how to deal with one another on a day-to-day basis.

Will they be able to withstand the pressure, or will they fold under the weight of the public machine?

They know the only thing they can do is take it one day at a time

Book #2 in the Rockin' Country Series

The Price of Love

Wife

Husband

Superstar entertainers

Two people completely in love

Harmony and Reaper thought life would be easier once they sealed the deal. Stage personas put to the side, settling into marriage should have allowed them to be Hannah and Garrett to the world at large.

Boy, were they ever wrong!

Pressure from record companies, fans, and the people surrounding them put their brand-new union under the strain of the entertainment machine. Long nights apart, quick meetings in hotel rooms, and new faces on the music scene were not what either of them thought they would have to contend with.

When love is strong, emotions go haywire, and frustration is at an all-time high, everyone's true colors are revealed.

Hannah and Garrett have a decision to make--is fame worth the price of love?

    Decent read, won't remember it
    By Kimberley
This book was a little confusing to me. It was presented as a contemporary romance, and there was lots of TALK about sex and sexy things. But when the sex scenes arrived, they just sort of faded to black. And suddenly I was in junior high school reading a Harlequin Romance book. The book was well written, and I liked the characters, but the dissonance between all the talk about sex and then never actually reading a sex scene was odd. You got to read about foreplay and oral sex, but not really much of that either. I don't mind that, but this book presented itself as a contemporary romance and then suddenly screeched to a halt for... The next morning I woke up and.... I did get a bit impatient with Hannah, and Garrett was sometimes a little too much of the loose canon to suit me, but all in all a decent read. I stopped after the first book because I wasn't feeling compelled read any more. It wasn't bad, it just didn't do much for me. Hannah was surprisingly and sometimes infuriatingly naïve for someone who had been in the music industry for so long. I ended up liking Shell more than Hannah. I didn't DISLIKE Hannah, she just didn't really make that big of an impression on me. A solid read, but one I will forget before the end of the week.

This is one of the best series I have read in awhile
    By Gina Rose 1
This is one of the best series I have read in awhile, Hannah and Garrett have a beautiful love story and it's told beautifully, she is country music's sweetheart and he is rock music's bad boy and a chance meeting is all it takes for them to fall in love. Laramie Briscoe did a great job telling their story, I was hooked from the first few pages. I would def. recommend this book it is a great romance.

    Rock in books
    By Kindle Customer
First this book was sweet and steamy but not over the top. One thing I loved and give kudos for is the separation of the two character's. This is where some authors flop. Hannah and Garrett have busy lives and can't be together always the secondary character's make up for this and are not just fillers. The romance was executed perfectly and not much angst. Jared is a great character. I can't wait to see him developed more. Loved Hannah and Garrett. Perfect 5

Course Textbook that was an enjoyable read
By Mr DIY & Mr Mom
Santino's book is an excellent broad spectrum analysis on the cultural interpretations behind the holidays that we celebrate. The level of detail the author goes into regarding not only the holidays, but the seasons surrounding them is quite in-depth. I enjoyed this book not only because it was a required textbook for a course I was taking, but also because of how informative the book was overall.

    Review
""Dazzled and Deceived" is surely destined to become a classic. Peter Forbes has written a compelling and fascinating history of mimicry and camouflage; but, much more than that, he persuades us that mimicry is at the heart of the story of evolution. He has found an exciting and novel way of presenting this ever-intractable story, and raises important questions which the theory of evolution has hardly begun to answer."--Christopher Potter, author of "You Are Here: A Portable History of the Universe

    "--Christopher Potter

"From the great battle of life in nature to the great battlefields of human conflict, mimicry is one of the oldest and most effective tricks in all warfare. In this fascinating synthesis of science, art and history, Peter Forbes chronicles the marvellous and ingenious devices that evolution has produced and humans have designed to deceive foes. "Dazzled and Deceived" is a delightful journey into our growing understanding of how life imitates art." - Sean B. Carroll, author of" Remarkable Creatures" and" The Making of the Fittest

    "--Sean B Carroll

"It is a long time since I read a book that gave me so much enjoyment and told me so much both about the animal world and about human ingenuity. This is a wonderful story, engagingly told." - Michael Ruse, author of "Darwin and its Discontents

    "--Michael Ruse

""Dazzled and Deceived" tells a fine story. It is a delight . . . I unhesitatingly recommend the book to both scientists and nonscientists."--;i>American Scientist
    "--Steven Vogel "American Scientist "

"This is a fascinating exploration of the use of visual trickery to disguise the nature of objects both in the living world and in the military...Overall a wonderful topic that really hasn't been given enough coverage, especially given its importance in understanding the mechanisms of evolution better, and an excellent book. Highly recommended." -- Brian Clegg, Popular Science
    --Brian Clegg"Popular Science" (01/28/2010)

"As a military historian I have had to ditch many boyhood passions, but fortunately the study of camouflage mixes nature with military history and art, and Peter Forbes does full justice to this fascinating combination in "Dazzled and Deceived "... [He] tells brilliantly this exciting and colourful story with good anecdotes, bizarre characters and intriguing evidence." -- Tim Neward, "Financial Times"--Tim Neward "Financial Times "

"In this excellent and wide-ranging book, Forbes makes the hidden histories of science recognisable"-- Leena Lindstrom, "Nature"--Leena Lindstrom "Nature "

Camouflage in Art, War, and Nature
    By Rob Hardy
Some animals like to sport bright colors, as if they want to be seen. Others favor drab colors, as if they want to blend in and avoid recognition. There must be advantages to both strategies. Soldiers used to sport bright red clothing in the field, and now tend to go with grey and olive blotches, if they are in forest, and beige spotty patterns if they are on sand. The invisible hand of evolution is at work in the natural world and the visible one of tacticians is at work in the military one, both hands working on the vital competition of appearances. There aren't so many soldiers who are still trying to stand out, but the animals who do so, and plenty of soldiers and sailors and animals who try to blend in, all come under the attention of _Dazzled and Deceived: Mimicry and Camouflage_ (Yale University Press) by Peter Forbes. The effort toward understanding military and natural camouflage has been not just separate efforts by naturalists and soldiers, but combined work in the field, joined also by artists and even a magician. Just as you would suspect, there are plenty of surprises in this book, along with a fine introduction to the evolution of mimicry down to the current biochemical understandings.

Forbes spends much of the book on butterflies, like _Leptalis_, which use camouflage in a distinct way. They mimic the bright colors and patterns of another butterfly, the _Heliconidae_. What was the advantage of looking like another butterfly? The imitated _Heliconidae_ sported bright colors as a sort of warning; it wanted to be seen and recognized, because it tasted bad and was unpalatable. The more recognizable it was, the more often bird predators would leave it alone. But _Leptalis_, on the other hand, was tasty. It displayed the warning colors and markings of _Heliconidae_, but in the case of _Leptalis_, the warnings were false. False or true, the warnings helped give each butterfly a better chance of surviving and passing on its genes. The false imitation warnings were complicated enough (and occur in other species like snakes, not just insects), but there were true imitation warnings as well. Unrelated species of bad-tasting butterflies (and even moths) shared colors and markings. Their true warnings reinforced each other every time a bird tried to eat one and learned how bad a creature with such appearance tasted. In the 1890s, a cranky New England painter burst into the realm of naturalists who were concerned with camouflage and mimicry. Abbott H. Thayer thought that only an artist could rightly appreciate the profundity of the deceptive pictures made by birds and animals. He obsessively insisted that coloration was for no other purpose than to obscure the animal; he didn't accept that colors might be bright for the purpose of warning. He was dogmatic and pugnacious about his discoveries of coloration, and took it upon himself to advise the US Navy about how to disguise its ships during the Spanish-American War. His ideas were ignored, but he did patent the idea of countershading ships, and went on to design disruptive coloration for them. He teamed with the Scots zoologist John Graham Kerr to have British ships painted in "dazzle" patterns, bold darks and lights that obscured the form of the ship and even made it look as if it were on a different heading from its true one. The interplay between military tacticians, naturalists, and artists (which, given the personalities involved, was often angry) gives Forbes a background to tell a broad story about camouflage, including how tanks were hidden in the African campaign of World War Two, and how the flamboyant magician Jasper Maskelyne helped troops and equipment disappear (or was it all hocus-pocus?).

Much of Forbes's book describes the science and scientists working out how chromosomes have activated the chemistry that, for instance, turns inheritance into particular wing colors. There are good profiles of artists and scientists. It is a pleasure, for instance, to read about Miriam Rothschild, who was a member of the famous banking family, and used some of her fortune to equip a laboratory in her home where she investigated how inedible monarch butterflies got their toxins. She worked out how caterpillars evolved an invulnerability to toxins of particular milkweed plants, and not only did this make the plants their particular field of forage, they absorbed the toxins into their own systems to make them toxic in turn. She tested the toxins on starlings - the birds vomited. He explains how the animal most famous for blending in, the chameleon, actually is more likely to change its colors for the purpose of standing out, like for signaling aggressiveness between males. He writes admiringly of the best trickster in nature, the octopus, that "compendium of every camouflage and mimicry technique known." Ranging into art, military tactics, field biology, evolution, and biochemistry, Forbes has given a unique look into the hidden techniques of natural and artificial camouflage. Natural and artistic and military techniques, he shows, don't follow any particular advancement or grand design; they all in their fashion take their chances, make choices, and do experiments.

Generally the concept of camouflage implies that an individual (a soldier) or an object (a tank) appears at a precise point of time (the fight) altered to such anextent-posing himself as something quite different (a landscape, a forest)-that he or it in this context of appearing isn't recognizable in his/its being as the authentic other (the threatening) or keeps a low profile. First of all, this precise point of time is given in an unusual situation, and for this reason camouflage from the trompe-l'oeil, the optical illusion produced in the 19th Century by a certain painting technique, from the military history in the Second World War and from the observation of nature. It's revealing that camouflage is emerging with a new optical paradigm in the First World War (trenches, air reconnaissance, submarine war) that makes necessary new forms of dissimulation and also changes with the technologies up to the modern day Stealth bombers that are nearly invisible to today's radar. In the difference to the forms of mimicry to be found at plants and animals, man is able to mislead not only by disguising but also by language like an agent of the U.S. Secret Service. The term "camouflage" is also covering situations in which politicians present things in a distorted way, or in which managers gloss over their balance sheets. Forged objects or documents like passports or visas do certainly belong to the standard repertoire of dissimulation but they are assigned to the methods of forgery and include a complex procedure going beyond optical effects. In the Nazi-era, the adaptation of the Nazi style layout helped Communist and Libertarian underground journals to find some circulation. The animal kingdom provides examples of all the essential principles of camouflage: the chameleon, whose colors change to merge with its setting; the zebra, whose vivid stripes disrupt its outline and make it more difficult for predators to sight from a distance; and the stick insect that pretends to be what it's not. Creativity in the art of disguise was spurred in World War I by the threats of aerial reconnaissance and long-range enemy fire. Aircraft and ships were painted with lozenge and zigzag patterns to make them more difficult to target. Artists were involved in creating these patterns, and were influenced in turn by the extraordinary painted vessels, said to be like floating cubist paintings. In 1919, the Chelsea Arts Club of London, inspired by wartime camouflage patterns, staged the Dazzle Ball, the first known example of camouflage influencing popular culture. Since then, artists from Pablo Picasso to Andy Warhol to Bridget Riley have explored the themes and extremes of camouflage and optical illusion, while camouflage patterns in clothes and accessories have filtered from the street to high fashion and back again. Uniforms made from camouflage-printed textiles were first developed before World War II, and teams of artists, designers, and scientists worked together to create ever more sophisticated modes of camouflage and disguise. Today's high-tech research on textiles that are resistant to infrared and thermal detection shows a new direction in the future of camouflage. While there are far more technical books on the subject, which are crammed with military jargon, DAZZLED AND DECEIVED: MIMICRY AND CAMOUFLAGE is a book that quickly covers the subject, and highlights the beauty of camouflage.
