A deeply moving story of two men and their love, cut short
By R.R. Wye
As a gay man living in North America I’ve encountered many gay-related stories that are trivial, overly cliched, or just plain boring. Holding the Man, by Timothy Conigrave, is definitely not one of them. The book has moved me deeply, and I believe it to be one of the most meaningful I’ve ever read, of any kind. It stands out as a truly authentic, relevant voice as it describes the lives and circumstances of people with whom we can readily identify, despite what might seem at first to be significant differences.

The book tells the story of the author and the love of his life, John Caleo, from the author’s early days in school in the very late 1960s through to the time of John’s untimely death, nearly three years before the author’s own, in the early 1990s. The book can be read on many levels: A gay man’s coming out story, a love story, a description of a particular time and place, a story of living through a time of plague, a story of loss, grieving, and death. The book artfully transcends its inherent gravity as the story unfolds, compelling the reader to continue on reading despite the knowledge and fear of what is ultimately coming.

One of the reasons for the book’s resonance is that the people it describes are all real, vividly described. I’ve been moved by other works of literature (and I do believe in time this book will be considered literature), but they have typically been works of the author’s imagination. As meaningful as Brokeback Mountain was, both as short story and film, Ennis del Mar and Jack Twist didn’t actually exist. But Tim and John did live, were surrounded by friends and family, and contended with things that seem all too familiar to so many of us.

I didn’t know Tim and John, and yet I do know them. They were born only a bit more than half a decade before me, on a different continent on the other side of the world but in a society similar to mine. Tim’s descriptions of life growing up gay were riveting reading, being so very different and yet so much the same as my own. Throughout the story the mixture of the seemingly mundane with the far-reaching, such as John’s happiness in purchasing a fancy new can opener in the face of grim circumstances, made the people in the book seem very familiar.

On other forums some readers have expressed disappointment or frustration with the Australian slang used throughout the book. I think they are missing the point. The book’s characters are Australians, living in Australia. I think it’s odd for others to expect them to speak in any idiom other than their own, and it’s easy enough to search for the meaning of words, even slang words, online when context doesn’t supply enough clues for international readers. The language used is one of the elements of the book that reminds the reader that these are real people, living real lives, in a real time and place.

I feel a range of emotions toward Tim, the author. One of them is anger, because Tim’s desire for “more” outside of his relationship with John is implicated in their lives being cut short. I don’t mean to judge Tim. His feelings in this regard are hardly unique to him or to gay men, then or now; extra-marital relationships exist throughout society and no doubt will continue. But as I read Tim telling John of his desire to meet people outside their relationship and as I knew what was coming I wanted so badly to somehow leap through the pages and go back in time and urge him to stop and reconsider, to think about the immense value, the rarity and preciousness of what he already had with John. One of the things I find particularly interesting about my reaction is when I consider that the book is written from Tim’s point of view, by Tim himself. My feelings are the result of Tim’s own telling of the story; there is no access to the story from John’s point of view. I feel that Tim himself is eliciting my reaction.

Some reviewers in other forums have written that Tim wrote the book as an extended apology to John. Considering what I’ve written above, I find that a plausible interpretation. If it’s true, I can only think of how Tim must have found the weight of his responsibility toward John’s demise a truly crushing burden to bear, on top of everything else both of them were going through, and it makes me all the more sad that it had to be endured by these two men. I feel so incredibly bad for these human beings, caught simply unaware as the sea of their lives retreated and then came crashing back, inundating them. Besides the personal loss of them as individuals to their friends and family, the loss of the contributions they, and countless others in similar circumstances, would have made to the world is staggering to comprehend.

The last line of the book, after I translated it using a web translation service, caused me to burst into tears. This was embarrassing as I finished the book as I sat on a bus headed home from work. I will not repeat or translate the line here, because I don’t want to rob other readers of the impact of discovering its meaning themselves when they come to that point at the end of the story. But I will say it is one of the most moving last sentences of a book I’ve ever encountered, as it bridges the essence of the story with the author’s foreknowledge of his own time to come.

I do wish there were an account of Tim’s final months or weeks elsewhere. From what I’ve pieced together from sources on the web it would appear that Tim practically willed himself to live long enough to finish the story, dying the month after completing it and a few months before the book was published. I am hoping that when Tim died he was also surrounded by those who loved him. Although I did not and will not know either one of them in actual life, thanks to how their story is told I find myself in the odd position of feeling as though I know and love them both.

Although I did not have the privilege of meeting either of you in life, you are two of the people I’ve encountered whom I would like to honor by living well and true, and remembering.

"Holding the Man" is a great testament to the triumph of love over different kinds ...
By William Barnes
"Holding the Man" is a great testament to the triumph of love over different kinds of adversity. In spite of familial and social disapproval, the author and his partner manage to pursue a life built together for 15 years. Despite sexual promiscuity on the part of the author, the men remain together even to the end of their lives, which were both cut short due to their deaths from AIDS complications. As a closeted gay man during the same time this story takes place, I was in awe of the courage these 2 men displayed in their honesty about their relationship in spite of tremendous pressure not to do so. I recommend this book to anyone who needs inspiration to live an honest, authentic life.

The Outsourced Self: Intimate Life in Market Times, by Arlie Russell Hochschild

From the famed author of the bestselling The Second Shift and The Time Bind, a pathbreaking look at the transformation of private life in our for-profit world

The family has long been a haven in a heartless world, the one place immune to market forces and economic calculations, where the personal, the private, and the emotional hold sway. Yet as Arlie Russell Hochschild shows in The Outsourced Self, that is no longer the case: everything that was once part of private life―love, friendship, child rearing―is being transformed into packaged expertise to be sold back to confused, harried Americans.

Drawing on hundreds of interviews and original research, Hochschild follows the incursions of the market into every stage of intimate life. From dating services that train you to be the CEO of your love life to wedding planners who create a couple's "personal narrative"; from nameologists (who help you name your child) to wantologists (who help you name your goals); from commercial surrogate farms in India to hired mourners who will scatter your loved one's ashes in the ocean of your choice―Hochschild reveals a world in which the most intuitive and emotional of human acts have become work for hire.

Sharp and clear-eyed, Hochschild is full of sympathy for overstressed, outsourcing Americans, even as she warns of the market's threat to the personal realm they are striving so hard to preserve.

Amazon.com Review
Amazon Exclusive: Barbara Ehrenreich Reviews The Outsourced Self
Barbara Ehrenreich is the best-selling author of Nickel and Dimed.

It's a rare and brilliant book that helps us see ordinary life in a whole new way. Take the business of children's birthday parties. When my children were little, I'd put on their parties myself--making the cake, setting up the party games, presiding over the subsequent chaos, and cleaning up the mess. Forty years later, my daughter arranges for "professionals" to create and manage her children's parties. The nationwide chain called The Little Gym, for example, runs a 90 minute party for $225, including invitations, paper goods, and leadership by a "qualified birthday leader plus an assistant." Parents watch the whole thing from the sidelines.

As Arlie Russell Hochschild shows, birthday parties are only one way we've "outsourced" our personal lives. We might seek on-line match-making companies to find a mate, paid relationship advisors to navigate the dating process, wedding planners if the process is successful, perhaps a surrogate mother to bear the children, then child-raising experts to advise on parenting issues--not to mention special consultants to arrange care for the older generation. In other words, that vast and impersonal entity--the market--is penetrating our most intimate relationships and managing the great turning points in our lives. Those who can afford to pay them are increasingly dependent on outside "experts," "coaches," and of course "birthday leaders."

Is this the dystopian outcome dreaded by social scientists since the 19th century? Or is it a rational adjustment to a busy and complex world where no one has time to make their own party favors? Hochschild is definitely drawn to the old, self-reliant, ways represented by her own grandparents, but she is a sociologist, not a scold. The Outsourced Self goes on to explore the ways people manage to redraw the lines between public and private and maintain a modicum of autonomy. I won't say Hochschild will "make" you think: She's such a keen observer and delightful writer that she makes it fun to think. --Barbara Ehrenreich

From Booklist
In her best-selling books The Time Bind (1997) and The Second Shift (1989), Hochschild examined how working mothers and two-income families balanced their home lives with the demands of holding down a career. Here she takes a look at personal life in the Internet age, where the trend is to reach for market services to fulfill needs traditionally met by family, friends, and the community. From online dating services to RentAFriend.com, where members pay $24.95 a month to review prospective “friends,” our basic capacity to develop personal relationships is being commoditized and outsourced. Hochschild examines the effect of market forces on marriage, child rearing, counseling, caregiving, and even death, where large, national funeral homes are supplanting traditional, local funeral parlors with a more consumer-based approach. This is a thoughtful exercise in taking stock of the aspects of life that get devalued in a culture that promotes the belief that “the market can do no wrong.” --David Siegfried

Review

“Incisive, provocative, and often downright entertaining...It used to take a village, but these days it takes a full-service mall, much of it in cyberspace. Finding a mate, planning a wedding, potty-training a child, or being a better father―once intuitive, ordinary tasks involving family, friends, and neighbors―now require the services of paid experts, trainers, and a plethora of coaches, such as Internet dating coach Evan Katz, aka e-Cyrano, or Family360, which teaches executives to “invest time and attention in ‘high leverage’ family activities.” ―Publishers Weekly (Starred Review)

“What happens to us as we outsource more and more of our personal―even intimate―tasks to paid "coaches," caretakers, companions, event planners and third world surrogate mothers? It takes a social thinker of great stature and scope to tackle this question, and a writer of immense charm to make the answer riveting. Arlie Hochschild is both, and this may be her best book ever.” ―Barbara Ehrenreich

“The nation's leading sociologist of daily life has turned her razor-sharp eye to rapid advance of the commodity frontier. Exposing both extreme (love coaches, wantologists) and ordinary (elder care, party planners) cases, Hochschild has produced a brilliant, compelling, and hard-to-put-down account of the expansion of market logic and its effects on our culture. This book deserves the country's attention.” ―Juliet Schor, author of Plenitude: The New Economics of True Wealth

“What have we given up, Arlie Hochschild worries, when we start paying experts for our most intimate activities? Taking us into a fascinating tour of love coaches, wedding planners, surrogate mothers and more, Hochschild offers her own compelling and controversial answers. Another triumph from this masterful social analyst and a gift to her legion of readers.” ―Viviana Zelizer, author of The Purchase of Intimacy

Looking for love in all the right [market] places
By Dr. Cathy Goodwin
I'm a big fan of Arlie Hochschild, since I read The Managed Heart in grad school. She's done ground-breaking research in emotion management, then went on to talk about families and managing time.

This time I was eager to get her book. The writing and organization are superb. My biggest disappointment is that the book turned out to be a very fine piece of journalistic writing. The jacket of the preview copy referred to original research, but I saw only references to occasional articles. Most references were to the popular journals.

I'd have liked to see a more rigorous discussion of the origins of this phenomenon as well as a more precise delineation of the concept. Does outsourcing these "intimate" services resemble paying for organ donation, a controversial area? Or is it just an extension of outsourcing services like restaurant dining and house cleaning? I'd also like to see some research on outsourcing's impact on society and on the "self." The title is catchy but what's outsourced isn't the self but a series of activities, often leaving more time for self-expression and self-discovery.

Hochschild begins by contrasting her own childhood on a farm with her other life as a pampered daughter of a State Department employee overseas; at home on the farm, the family pitched in to do everything. At the embassy everything was outsourced to drivers and house staff.

Throughout the book, Hochschild presents this theme: the old way - when people did things for themselves or turned to their families - versus the contemporary way of paying to get things done. Hochschild investigates several diverse areas of outsourcing, including dating, funerals, surrogate parenting, surrogate parenting, friendship, wedding planning and children's party organizing. She digs deeply into one provider and one customer in each area. For instance, she interviewed Marc Katz as a dating coach and talked to one of his satisfied clients at length. We get an interesting story but can't draw broader conclusions about the phenomenon of online dating or the proliferation of dating coaches.

Hochschild seems bothered by the fact that people are turning to paid resources for help. She emphasizes feelings of conflict that some interviewees admit: "How much should I do and how much should I outsource?" There's an unspoken implication that we outsource only when we must; given adequate time, we could do all these things ourselves.

Yet I can't help wondering: What's the problem? Much of this isn't new. And if you want to make the case that individuals, groups or societies are being harmed, you need to come up with some evidence.

It's certainly true that some of our most memorable experiences come from doing things ourselves; Hochschild remembers her own farm and she describes a dad who tried to host his own children's party. Yet was there really a more idyllic era when people took care of themselves and relied on family? Often the work that's now done by paid outsiders was done by the wife of the nuclear family. Some of those women felt just as invisible as the paid professional assistant. Weddings? Caregiving? Parenting? Yes - that was mom's job.

Hochschild notes that people confide in coaches, psychotherapists and massage therapists. (She notes that coaches are encouraged to "keep their distance," but that doesn't mean cutting off a client who's determined to over-share.) What's new? Hair stylists and bartenders have been hearing personal stories - a phenomenon documented in the academic literature. The coaching profession began to grow in the early part of this century but top executives and professionals often hired "consultants" to help them informally, under a different name.

I wish Hochschild had dug deeper into the broader scale of personal services, which has had an impact on many of us. When I was an undergraduate, I don't recall classmates who paid for manicures, pedicures, waxing and highlights; when I taught undergraduates in the late 1990s, many viewed these services as necessities. Few people agree with one of my crotchety friends who can't understand why women get manicures; "can't they do their own nails?" he asks, genuinely bewildered. Massages used to be reserved for athletes and actors; now just about everyone has had a massage at least once.

I also wonder if we've created a culture of dependence and if it's bad. For years I exercised on my own in the gym, sometimes with group classes. Then a personal trainer offered a trial pack of discounted sessions and now when time permits I love working with a trainer. Up through the 60s or 70s, most people dealt with their own career challenges and until very recently, college students completed their own applications. Now career coaches and admissions services are common. Of course, a problem does arise when the college students try to outsource their homework assignments.

One question I've pondered is, "Why do some problems lead to services and others don't?" For instance, coaches are available to help with divorce and wedding planning. Moving is just as complex and can be even more costly in both money and agony, yet the notion of a relocation coach hasn't caught on. There's also an irony that, surprisingly, wasn't mentioned: while families outsource all sorts of support, we're seeing an increase in home schooling.

Finally, I find myself agreeing with the respondent who asked, "What's the problem? Services are better when you pay for them." Part of the reason is that we often pay for services to navigate complex, high-risk journeys that we take infrequently. Getting into college, getting divorced or caring for an aging parent is a once-in-a-lifetime experience for many of us; we just don't have the knowledge to make wise decisions. Why should we?

Anyway, sometimes it's easier to pay than to negotiated informal "favors" that often carry a bigger price tag. Hospitals frequently require patients to find a ride home after certain procedures, and these days you can pay someone. (One hospital outpatient service used to require the "family member" to remain onsite the entire time of outpatient surgery; they had to give up the requirement because few people could do it.) Laws are changing to allow compensation for bone marrow donation, and ultimately (I suspect) organ donation, ultimately saving thousands of lives. Writing in the New York Times Magazine, psychiatrist Sally Satel claimed that she'd rather have paid for a kidney outright than dealt with the awkward negotiations and time-consuming search for a kidney that didn't come with intangible baggage.

Of course, as Hochschild says, nothing is perfect. She reports people who have had trouble with dating services, including a "friend of a friend" who knew someone who was attacked on a computer date. Well, that's not new either, and the same thing could happen with dating partners who are introduced by a friend or meet at an office party.

Perhaps I'm imposing my own requirements on this book. I really wanted some sociological theory, not another journalistic series of chapters. At the same time, I couldn't help becoming engaged in Hochschild's arguments and in her own story. The book is definitely worth reading; if I were still in a book club I'd love to discuss this one.

An easy read, but nothing new
By Joseph Oppenheim
The author, who used to live on a farm in Turner, Maine, in about the 1930's, then after her dad was transferred to a US embassy in Israel, everything was done for the family, recalled of a time when, for families the pride was in the labor, everybody helping everybody, where little money changed hands, but many gifts were given. Also, more people moved from farms to the cities, with the rise of the working woman and divorce undermining the ability of families to care for themselves, while more services were used by the middle class.

The book goes into how more and more these services were outsourced. Examples, etc covered in the book are....

1. Courtship moved from the community all the way to on-line services like match.com. Similar services were provided for finding college roommates and company work teams. Also, services for love coaches, wedding planners including elopement packages.

2. In vitro fertilizations and surrogate moms, and with college tuitions getting expensive, coeds becoming egg donors for money.

3. Nameologists, baby planners, specialists for safety proofing homes, teaching babies sign language, potty training, driving children around to activities, child birthday planners, etc.

4. Also the author describes "Family360" which provides a parents evaluation which is a starter service to be followed by other paid services depending on evaluation results.

5. Plenty of child-rearing books, etc.

6. The author also writes that the global south part of the planet has borne the brunt of these "neo-liberal" economic policies where free markets have caused these southern nations to lose jobs (workers headed to the US for higher pay service jobs, then send money back to the nations). But, people who do remain in these nations live more authentic, relaxed lives.

7. Household managers are described. Also, life coaches, jobs to help the elderly. Plus, services like Rent-a-Mom, Rent-a-Dad, Rent-a-Grandma, Rent-a-Friend, etc. Including people who visit nursing/senior home residents, funeral, grave site services.

8. Wantologists to provide whatever a person wants.

9. Curiously, many who call for the expansion of the free market to provide these services are the very people who call for stronger family values.

In conclusion, an easy read, though most of the tings covered should be pretty obvious to most people, so I can't say I learned anything significant from the book, though some may benefit.

I Should Have Outsourced This Review
By takingadayoff
Author Arlie Hochschild begins the The Outsourced Self by recalling her childhood on a small farm in New England, when everyone in the extended family and the community pitched in during tough times. I immediately assumed that she would be looking at all this newfangled outsourcing as a bad thing. On the contrary, she treats the whole project as the professional sociologist that she is, and keeps an open mind. The reader, on the other hand, may find some of the examples over the top. I certainly did.

Professional dating coaches seemed extreme to me, but as I read about them, I could see the advantage in having someone who isn't a friend or relative to tell you what you're doing wrong. Sometimes your best friend really won't tell you.

The whole surrogate mother phenomenon is already Twilight Zone territory in my mind, but I had no idea that some people actually hire women in India to carry their offspring to term. This chapter was the most dramatic and memorable in the book.

Of course, some of the jobs have been around for a long time and people have been wrestling with whether it's "cheating." The section on children's birthday party planners made me remember the Dick Van Dyke Show episode in which the parents were almost peer-pressured into renting an amusement park for their eight-year-old's birthday party. They decided to buck the trend and it was a disaster, and then a memorable, if exhausting party for both the children and adults. In real life, as Hochschild tells it, the results are also disastrous, but remembered fondly by the children.

The narrative running through the book is a personal one, in which Hochschild tries to do the right thing for her aunt in New England who can't live alone anymore, but who has no other relatives to turn to. Hochschild lives in California, so it's a dilemma. The sociologist turns into a real person who weighs the pros and cons of outsourcing the most basic of responsibilities - taking care of a loved one. It's a balancing act in terms of quality of care, cost, and guilt.

At one point, Hochschild wonders if all this outsourcing is saving anyone any time at all, or is it like the advent of all the home appliances that were going to save housewives time and effort? You already know the answer - just like the personal computers that were going to create a paperless office and allow us to become super efficient - what used to be weekly laundry has become daily laundry and phone calls that had to be answered tomorrow have become emails or texts that have to be answered within minutes.

It does appear that many people have lost the plot when they hire parenting coaches, for instance. But on the plus side, now we have experts to help us sort through the paperwork and decisions to make when a parent suddenly has to go into a nursing home.

GUNPLA for Dummies
By Dan
I just bought this book last week and just arrived today. Took me a little over an hour to fully go through and overall this book is decent. I am a beginner, I grew up watching Gundam and when I was much younger I use to build the kits. Like most 11 years old... I had no Idea what I was doing. I started again when I was in high school and like MOST high school students.. I was broke so I couldn't afford kits or supplies. But now I am older and could afford kits and supplies.

This little book offers great starter tips for beginners. I been looking through Gundam tutorials online and they offer great advice but most of the time they don't give specifics on supplies and basic techniques.

Pros.
-Explains what you need, Supplies wise.
-Easy to understand and follow.
-Perfect for beginners
-Bashes on Gundam Markers ;) (For lazy people)
-Not bulky and very VERY easy to go through.
-Explains all the paint necessary and how to mix them with different types (For people like me.. I have no idea the difference between Acrylic and Enamel until now)
-Finally explains if American made products are good on Gundam models (for people who don't like waiting for something to ship when there is a Michaels down my street)
-There is a Tallgeese on the cover. That.. is Amazing.
-Table of contents, always a good thing.

Cons
-No really organized. In the middle of explaining something.. the next paragraph or statement is something completely different then the next paragraph they would go back to talking about the previous paragraph. (if that made any sense are)
-Talks a little too much about putty and glue and only about 3 pages worth of painting.
-A Little pricey for a book that looks like it was made on a power point program and the pictures are a little blurry, black & White and not exactly organized.

This review is a little rough but I am sure you get it. If you are a beginner and just need a good guide when it comes to tools, paints and glue this is perfect if you feel like dishing out $15 bucks. If you know your stuff and think you are too good for this book. Then good for you. Move on. This book is made for DUMMIES I mean.. it is so SIMPLE to understand. I mean.. SIMPLE.

But yeah, pretty decent book I am glad to pick it up so I can have a reference right next to me when working on future kits.

The ultimate gunpla building guide? Not really but its ok.
By Kay One
I've started getting back into the Gunpla hobby after 15 years or so, and while I built the models as a kid, I wasn't so much interested in the building process as I was in the finished product. Now being a little older, wiser and a lot more patient, I wanted to try my hand at plastic model building again but this time enjoy the process as well as the final product and build with a little more technique and style, so out of curiosity I picked up this book wondering what kind of tips I could glean to apply towards my revived model making hobby.

The book itself is clearly put together and published by fans of Gunpla model building and they make it clear this is a not a licensed Bandai product. The publication is clean but a little plain and all the photos are in black & white hinting at cheaper publication costs, this is the type of guide where color photos would have been more helpful. Still there were some good tips on types of paints, equipment to use for detailing and finishing the gunpla kits which I found useful but the rest is indeed geared towards total beginners as a guide for explaining the various model kit lines from the beginning to current technology with the HG and MG kits (doesn't mention anything about the PG kits) and provides a basic orientation for someone completely new to Gunpla.

Did I get my money's worth? Not really, but is it a useful guide for someone starting out in Gunpla? Sure.

Good for real beginners
By You Erkang
If you have already built a few kits, and read some tutorials on the internet, don't buy it. This book is full of FAQs and answers a lot of common(trivial) questions. And, this book is not in color, unlike most of the Gunpla books by Japanese, which makes it really ugly. It does not cover much on how to actually build the model, although it might be a good reference to tools.

Ancient Egyptian Medicine, by John F. Nunn, J. F. Nunn

The skills of the ancient Egyptians in preserving bodies through mummification are well known, but less recognized is their expertise in the everyday medical practices needed to treat the living. John F. Nunn draws on his own experience as a physician and Egyptologist to reassess the evidence on ancient Egyptian medical practices. Nunn has translated and reconsidered the original Egyptian medical papyri and has re-evaluated other sources of information, including skeletons, mummies, statues, tomb paintings, and sarcophagi.

Illustrations highlight similarities in the conditions of ancient and modern patients, and Nunn appraises the criteria ancient Egyptian doctors used to make their diagnoses in the context of current medical knowledge—showing that many of their findings are still valid today. He also explores ancient Egyptian spells and incantations and the relationship of magic and religion to medical practices.

Incorporating recent insights of modern medicine and Egyptology, Nunn provides readers with a comprehensive and authoritative book on a fascinating subject.

brilliant history and very interesting discussion of medicine
By doc peterson
Nunn, a retired physician and Egyptologist, has written the definitive book on ancient Egyptian medicine, incorporating both a detailed understanding of the science of healing with scholarly historical and linguisitc analysis. A caveat - the first three chapters (on extant medical texts, their origins, similarities and details of their recent ownership and provenance) is dry and are related to the rest of the book only inasmuch as they are the bulk of the sources used by him. Do not be dissuaded from what is really a gem of a treatise by this slow start.

Having laid a foundation of the medical papyri and the Egyptian concept of physiology and pathology, Nunn really hits his stride when writing about disease, drug therapy and surgery. His familarity with ancient Middle Egyptian sa it pertains to diagnoses and treatment is clearly apparent, his inferences and analyses clearly supported. His chapter on "The Pattern of Disease" was brilliant, discussing the challenges to piecing together ancient diseases from mummies (given time, the nature of preservation, and the availability of tissues that can be analyzed). His discussion on parasitic disease and infection was detailed, but written in a manner that was accessable for a lay-person (non-physician) to understand. His chapter on the ancient Egyptian pharmacopeia (in terms of medicines, minerals and measurement of drugs) was similarly conceptually accessable.

What was most striking to me was not only the level of medical sophistication the ancient Egyptians had, but the amount of detail Egyptologists are able to glean from not only a handful of medical papyri, but from tombs, mummies, ostraca and artwork. (In particular a scene of work-related injuries from a 20th dynasty tomb at Deir al-Medina - tomb 217 - was especially striking.) For anyone interested in the history of medicine or Egyptology, this is a must-read. Highest recommendations.

Waste of time, waste of money and waste of brain power. Better franchise books out there.

More boring than a statistics textbook
By Joseph Dewey
I graduated in Statistics, and so I know boring books. And, this book was more boring than any of my Statistics texts.

It is written in textbook format. It is also written by a bunch of different authors, so it's really disjointed. As an example, the chapter guest written by an attorney in boring legalese is probably the most interesting.

And, they misspelled McDonalds. In a book about FRANCHISES! I could understand if they misspelled Wal-Mart in a book about franchises, but how can you write a book about franchises and misspell McDonalds? See the misspelling on pages 86 and 196.

Also, it is written to franchisors, not franchisees. Since the marketing of the book makes it look like it's trying to appeal to everyone, it took me a few chapters to figure out that it's actually written to franchisors. Repeat: It is NOT good for franchisees.

I did complete the entire book. I'm not one of those reviewers who calls the book boring after reading a few pages and throwing it away. I am someone who plugged through so that I could warn everyone else.

Best Book on Franchising Today
By Thomas Scott
There are simply not enough books on franchising today. This book is a wealth of knowledge for anyone interested in franchising either as a prospective franchisee or involved in the industry as a franchisor. Most of the books on the market are geared towards franchisees - this book really serves as a great primer for the industry as a whole and a solid guide for franchisors. It is required reading in our company and I recomend it to candidates. Thanks to the authors for sharing their gems with the rest of us.

Electromagnetic metamaterials-from fundamental physics to advanced engineering applications

This book presents an original generalized transmission line approach associated with non-resonant structures that exhibit larger bandwidths, lower loss, and higher design flexibility. It is based on the novel concept of composite right/left-handed (CRLH) transmission line metamaterials (MMs), which has led to the development of novel guided-wave, radiated-wave, and refracted-wave devices and structures.

The authors introduced this powerful new concept and are therefore able to offer readers deep insight into the fundamental physics needed to fully grasp the technology. Moreover, they provide a host of practical engineering applications.

The book begins with an introductory chapter that places resonant type and transmission line metamaterials in historical perspective. The next six chapters give readers a solid foundation in the fundamentals and practical applications:
* Fundamentals of LH MMs describes the fundamental physics and exotic properties of left-handed metamaterials
* TL Theory of MMs establishes the foundations of CRLH structures in three progressive steps: ideal transmission line, LC network, and real distributed structure
* Two-Dimensional MMs develops both a transmission matrix method and a transmission line method to address the problem of finite-size 2D metamaterials excited by arbitrary sources
* Guided-Wave Applications and Radiated-Wave Applications present a number of groundbreaking applications developed by the authors
* The Future of MMs sets forth an expert view on future challenges and prospects

This engineering approach to metamaterials paves the way for a new generation of microwave and photonic devices and structures. It is recommended for electrical engineers, as well as physicists and optical engineers, with an interest in practical negative refractive index structures and materials.

Unequal Fortunes: Snapshots from the South Bronx, by Arthur Levine, Laura Scheiber

''Levine and Scheiber tell two tales about poor kids growing up in the Bronx -- one inspires, the other rips your heart out. They also compel us to recognize that educational failure has both individual and societal costs that can be fatal. We can and must do better.'' --Joel Klein, Chancellor, New York City Department of Education

''With all the emotive range of a literary novel, Arthur Levine and Laura Scheiber have written a persuasive call to action for all educators. We must be mentors and provide all students the chance to explore all the world has to offer, as best we can.'' --James P. Comer, M.D., Maurice Falk Professor of Child Psychiatry, Yale Child Study Center, Associate Dean, Yale School of Medicine

''We need more leaders like Arthur Levine who are willing to reach across community divides to build authentic relationships with the next generation of Americans. In Unequal Fortunes, Levine and Scheiber show what it means to learn and care about the lives of young Latinos and the payoffs for our children, their communities, and this country.'' --Sarita E. Brown, president, Excelencia in Education

''Compelling, incisive, and poignant. This is an intimate reflection of life's changing realities -- for individuals, neighborhoods, communities, and education. In this narrative manifesto for action, Levine and Scheiber inspire us upward to a dream for all!'' -- Sharon Lynn Kagan, Virginia and Leonard Marx Professor of Early Childhood and Family Policy, Teachers College, Columbia University

In this powerful book, Arthur Levine (president of the Woodrow Wilson Foundation) and coauthor Laura Scheiber revisit the South Bronx, where Levine grew up in the 1960s, and compare his experiences with those of a group of teenagers coming of age in the same neighborhood nearly 40 years later. Shaken by the violent death of Leo Disla, one of the young men in his group, Levine and Scheiber explore what happened to Leo and how society failed him. In this compelling account, we meet Leo's family and friends and learn about his hopes and fears. We witness the devastating effects of poverty and racism: low-wage, dead-end jobs; inadequate housing; high crime rates; appalling schools; violence; drugs; a broken legal system; prison; and underage funerals. The authors not only tell Arthur's and Leo's stories, but struggle to explain why their lives were so starkly different. They focus on the new social realities that have shaped Levine's old neighborhood, and they conclude with the lessons that must be learned if we are to help today's disenfranchised children and restore to them the American Dream of a ''better, richer, and happier life.''

Truth, Perspective, and Possibilities
By Stephanie
"All truth goes through three stages: 1)First it is ridiculed; 2)Second, it is violently opposed; 3)Finally it is accepted as self-evident ~Arthur Schopenhauer

I thought "Unequal Fortunes" was a moving, honest, and totally raw portrayal of a bitter reality in the world of education and society. I was mesmerized into each character's story and often found myself in suspense. This book is very well written and engaging, organized with insight, and inspiring to action for those who wish to focus on moving forward. I give praise to the authors of "Unequal Fortunes" for sharing this thoughtful work of academic integrity using real anecdotes of misfortune in a delicate balance of truth.

I've been compelled to share this book with teachers, parents, and those interested in education policy....

A must read for educators, parents, sociologists, new yorkers...
By Johanna Laikari
Unequal Fortunes is a heartbreaking and poignant tale of two kids growing up in the Bronx. It is also a beautifully and concisely written portrait of the challenges of our education system, and where we come up short. As well, Levine and Scheiber bring us into the raw, emotional landscape of the youth of today; this book made me enraged at the realities that they face. Only when we are all freed of the oppressions that some of us face, will we be able to function as a better society. This book is a step in that direction and is a must read for all those who work with, are parents of, come into contact with or are concerned about inner city youth in our country, and the educational system and society that shape them.

Does 'Artistic License' have limits ?
By Cathy T.
When an adult daughter sought an appropriate present for her father's 62nd birthday, she selected "Unequal Fortunes: Snapshots from the South Bronx" - since both of her parents grew up in the South Bronx. (Specifically, 140th St. and Cypress Ave.)

Part I - "Arthur's Story" - does, indeed, establish the author's bona fides as an alumnus of a South Bronx immigrant ghetto neighborhood similar to our own. For anyone from these and similar places, his descriptions of these early locations are grand nostalgia. Even his 1957 move from the South Bronx to the much-safer neighborhood in the mid-northern part of the Bronx - is described very well. We also made that "upward bound" trek to more northern climes in the Bronx in the mid-1960s - easily recognizing his accurate characterizations of this decidedly _not_ South Bronx neighborhood. If this short book had ended there, it would have earned a much higher rating.
Parts II and III describe the trials of later, poorer residents of that second neighborhood, and how their fortunes diverged from the author's obvious success. Passed on through a broken school system without even basic skills, never desiring to part with their non-American identity by learning responsible American conduct or rudimentary English, the sad story of ethnic failure was repeated continuously throughout the entire Bronx from the 1940s until today. The author blames greedy businessmen, the courts, and even the police for the entirely-irresponsible lifestyle choices of many recent immigrants - instead of elitist academics, progressive sociologists, and others who would place enforced and sustained group diversity above the content of an individual's character.
This social-science experiment can be summed up in two words: Abject Failure.
Far too many of us first-generation and naturalized Americans - most, in fact - rose well above the poverty in the real South Bronx (often, with nothing more than a HS diploma, and sometimes, not even with that) - to buy into the author's bogus conclusions.
