The standard text

This is often referred to as the standard text on commutative algebra.
It is an exceptionally good book on a subject that is normally difficult to get a handle on. Eisenbud's readable book gives intuitive and motivated proofs of even very technical results in commutative algebra, often illustrated with instructive examples, such as the useful figures illustrating embedded primes. A very nice feature is that he gives proofs to all the results in commutative algebra used by Robin Hartshorne's popular "Algebraic Geometry," making them a nice pair of books to read together.
I found this to be useful as a reference as well as a text. Most sections are fairly self-contained and many important topics are included in depth. I almost always find that it is the best place to learn any of the material covered.
This book belongs on the shelf of anyone learning algebraic geometry, although it will spend plenty of time off the shelf as well.

Superb

If one is interested in taking on a thorough study of algebraic geometry, this book is a perfect starting point. The writing is excellent, and the student will find many exercises that illustrate and extend the results in each chapter. Readers are expected to have an undergraduate background in algebra, and maybe some analysis and elementary notions from differential geometry. Space does not permit a thorough review here, so just a brief summary of the places where the author has done an exceptional job of explaining or motivating a particular concept:
(1) The history of commutative algebra and its connection with algebraic geometry, for example the origin of the concept of an "ideal" of a ring as generalizing unique factorization.
(2) The discussion of the concept of localization, especially its origins in geometry. A zero dimensional ring (collection of "points") is a ring whose primes are all maximal, as expected.
(3) The theory of prime decomposition as a generalization of unique prime factorization. Primary decomposition is given a nice geometric interpretation in the book.
(4) Five different proofs of the Nullstellensatz discussed, giving the reader good insight on this important result.
(5) The geometric interpretation of an associated graded ring corresponding to the exceptional set in the blowup algebra.
(6) The notion of flatness of a module as a continuity of fibers and a test for this using the Tor functor.
(7) The characterization of Hensel's lemma as a version of Newton's method for solving equations. The geometric interpretation of the completion as representing the properties of a variety in neighborhoods smaller than Zariski open neighborhoods.
(8) The characterization of dimension using the Hilbert polynomial.
(9) The fiber dimension and the proof of its upper semicontinuity.
(10) The discussion of Grobner bases and flat families. Nice examples are given of a flat family connecting a finite set of ideals to their initial ideals.
(11) Computer algebra projects for the reader using the software packages CoCoA and Macaulay.
(12) The theory of differentials in algebraic geometry as a generalization of what is done in differential geometry.
(13) The discussion of how to construct complexes using tensor products and mapping cones in order to study the Koszul complex.
(14) The connection of the Koszul complex to the cotangent bundle of projective space.
(15) The geometric interpretation of the Cohen-Macauley property as a map to a regular variety.

Excellent Book...very atypical for a math book, but I like it!

People tend to have strong feelings about this book. In my opinion, the people who dislike it are those who expect it to be like a typical graduate-level math book. This book is extremely atypical for a math book; it's not meant to be read linearly, and the topics in it do not follow a typical logical dependency. Personally, I find it to be outstanding; my only complaint about it is that I wish there were more books like it!

Commutative algebra and algebraic geometry are extremely difficult subjects requiring a great deal of background. This book is written as a sort of intermediary text between introductory abstract algebra books with a full and exposition of algebraic structures, and advanced, highly technical texts that can be difficult to follow and grasp on a technical level. As such, this book focuses on developing intuition, and discussing the history and motivation behind the various mathematical structures presented. It assumes that most of the other aspects of the subject, including both the elementary expositions, and the more advanced technical details, can be found elsewhere (although, believe me, this book certainly has its share of both elementary expositions and advanced technical details!)

I think this book is actually better for self-study than for use as a textbook. Most of the people I have known who have used it as a textbook have been frustrated with it. Either way, it needs to be supplemented by other books. Personally, on algebra, I like the Dummit and Foote, Isaacs, and Lang books. Those three books have very little overlap with each other, and very little overlap with this book, and they offer a very useful difference of perspectives where they do overlap! I also would recommend reading the more elementary book by Cox, Little, and O'Shea, which can help you get a feel for the subject of algebraic geometry. Many people see this book's primary purpose as preparation for Robin Hartshorne's "Algebraic Geometry". I can't say, however, how effective it is at that purpose, as no matter how far I get in this book, all but a few sections from that book still remain quite far beyond my grasp.

Book for you to find out the tricks in the FI Certificate Exam

Thanks for the authors. I read the book a week before the exam I passed the exam with a pretty high marks.

After reading this book, you will know the skills how to pass the exam. The book is good, with the detail explanaions in each question.

However, some of the answers are quite confusing. For example, provided that there is a option "All of the above", the authors still expect you to select all the options. One of the questions has no correct answers but without giving an option "None of the above". Few questions the answers and the explanations are not consistent.

Anyway, those mistakes are not critical and this book is still worth to buy if you are about to take the exam. In facts, there are no such kind of books in the market so far.

The online shopping experience was not upto the expectation, i was told the book will be delivered in 10 working days and after 10 days got a message saying "your consignment is unbable to be delivered due to some circumstances and your money will be refunded back".
I had exams and couldnt prepare on time. Sad the service didnot meet any expectations.

About the Author
Blu Greenberg writes and lectures on contemporary Jewish subjects. Her first book, On Women and Judaism, was published in 1981 by the Jewish Publication Society. Married to a rabbi, she is the mother of five children, active in communal affairs, and yet manages to run a traditional Jewish household.

Fascinating even for non-observant people

I was raised in a completely non-observant household; we were "Christmas Tree" Jews. I never set foot inside a synagogue until my late 40s. I stumbled onto this book at the beginning of my search for information and my place in the greater Jewish community, and found it fascinating.
I have no intention of becoming Orthodox, and have found my own home in the Jewish Renewal movement, but turn to this book often for information. I especially appreciated the explanations of some of the rituals and traditions that don't "make sense" and was touched my the author's frank acknowledgement of her struggles and disagreements with some aspects of her practice - and her commitment to the preservation of those same traditions. In fact, I have come to believe that the greatest value of this book is just that - she clearly struggles with some aspects of her faith but is absolutely commited to its complete preservation - she doesn't pick and choose at the cafeteria of observance. Here is commitment writ large!
I didn't agree with everything she said - her statement that the women at the beach in the modest swimsuits are probably observant Jews struck me as a tad smug, since most faiths value modesty and the orthodox of all religions practice it. But overall, I found the book invaluable as I began my process of sorting out the holidays and practices. The practice I have found for myself is much more personal and spiritually oriented, I believe, but it's important, and valuable, to know about the roots of that practice.
So I recommend this book - I even gave a copy to my mother for Christmas!

A delightful introduction to traditional Jewish practice

Growing up in a Classical Reform home, where observance was minimal, Conservative practice considered dated and pointless, and Orthodoxy completely alien, I would never have expected to read this book, much less love it. But Blu Greenberg's writing describes modern Orthodox practice with such warmth and charm that we have actually taken on new observances after reading it. Furthermore, even practices we are unlikely to adopt have become understandable and something to appreciate. Highly recommended!

Want to peak inside the home of a modern Orthodox family?

I am a Jew by Choice (who chose Reform) who wants to learn more about the other Jewish movements. This book was recommended to me by a female friend at my Reform temple, and I was not disappointed. Blu Greenberg is open and honest about raising an Orthodox family in modern society. She is not the perfect Orthodox wife, nor does she pretend to be. Her book is part autobiography, part instruction. I found it very helpful as I move toward keeping a kosher home (yes, some Reform Jews do that!) and as I move toward closer observance of Shabbat. I read through the book and now refer to specific chapters when needed. She explains a ritual, followed by the appropriate prayer in Hebrew, transliteration, and English. If you want to see how the other half lives, here is your chance. I heartily recommend it.

Adventure and suspense!

Mr. Cole’s search for wealth in the 1851 gold rush in Australia leaves him dispirited and broke. Taking the next available ship back for England, the Lady Jermyn, he falls in love with Eva Denison, a beauty traveling with her exotic Portuguese stepfather. Disaster strikes when the ship catches fire, and Cole finds himself the sole survivor. Bereft after the loss of his true love, Cole seeks anonymity in London. But something is very strange; is he going mad, or is someone following him? If so, what do they want? Before the story is over, Cole with uncover a ghastly conspiracy, and propel him on an adventure that may cost him that which he loves the most.

Ernest William Hornung (1866-1921) was an excellent Victorian author who is now mainly remembered for his Raffles stories (if he is remembered at all). Before Raffles, though, in 1896 Hornung wrote this wonderful story. This story is exciting, with a wonderful mixture of adventure and suspense that will leave you on the edge of your seat!

I must add one word of warning, though. Being such an old book, it does reflect a society with different standards than our present one. Particularly, the story does involve an African character who is repeatedly referred to by the now discredited “n-word.” So, a certain amount of forbearance is required when reading this book.

Dated adventure

This is a mid-nineteenth century story of adventure on sea and land. It's certainly weak compared with Stevenson or Melville, but is fine for those who enjoy or study the period.

Mr. Cole takes a boat to Australia during the gold rush. He finds little gold, so he goes back home. As it happens, he gets on the same boat he came out on, the 'Lady German.' Whereupon he meets Eva Denison. He does not immediately fall in love, but he does eventually. She is being escorted back to England by her step-father, Jorges Santos.
The boat is not just taking some folks back to England, but has a secret cargo, and, as it happens, catches fire and is lost at sea. Mr. Cole, it appears, is the only survivor of this tragedy. There are some hints of the coming events, but none that explain the full extent of what is occurring.
The story explains Mr. Coles survival and his life in London, where Mr. Cole is feted and praised as the survivor to distraction. Etc.,etc., the events happen and everything turns out for good because others have evidence and wit to realize what is happening, so save the day.
This not a swashbuckling tale, or detective fiction, but it could be one or the other to my mind. It was inetesting to hear.

I can barely look my friends in the eye, let alone a stranger. I froze, like a rabbit, or a baby deer, caught in his gaze, unable to move, unable to run, though I felt like there was a freight train bearing down on me.

Then he had laughed, deep in his throat, and left. I had sat down in the middle of the hallway, the cobblestone floor cold on the back of my legs, somehow both exhausted and terrified by the experience. Joy had to pull me up off the floor. I couldn’t stand on my own.

“What was that?” I had cried, feeling like I’d been violated right there in the hall.

Joy just shrugged. “They’re all like that,” she told me, meaning trolls. “He likes you. That’s how they show it.”

“But what do I do?”

Joy’s wings fluttered slightly, like they always did when she was choosing her words carefully.

“Don’t walk down any dark hallways alone,” she said, finally.
