C. must have closely resembled that of any inhabitant of the Orient up to about fifty years ago,” writes M. Contenau. This account of Mesopotamian life is, therefore, pertinent not only to an understanding of the age of Assyria and Babylonia but also to all the civilizations that have succeeded it in that part of the world.

I actually got the copy from the local library and did not expect much from this book. You know how most of American books on the subject are, bright pictures like in the books for 4-years olds, and about the same intellectual level of content repeating the same shallow stuff about putting cuneiforms onto wet clay tablets with a sharp stick.

Not this book. It's past midnight and I still cannot force myself to put this book down. For my writing project I am interested in the actual details: How did the dress looked like? For a man? For a woman? For a priestess? How rich dress was distinctive from a poor one? What they did first thing in the morning? What was on their feet? How did they wash themselves? The book is rich with these details, and if they show some medival picture, they don't pretend, it's accurate. Or, more precisely, they tell about each illustration how close to the real picture it is, what's right on it, and what's not. O-o-oh... good!

A Fairly Easy Read

It's not exactly brand new, but the author manages to do a fairly good job of putting you in the mind-set of the ancient Mesopotamians. It is not overly long either, so the book managed to hold my interest.

It's arranged topically, everything from religious beliefs to toilet etiquette is covered. Some handy pictures are dotted throughout the text (but not of the toilet etiquette, thank goodness).

Don't buy a book like this if you are new to the subject - you'll probably need *some* clue about Mesopotamia before you pick it up. But for more serious students/amateur historians, I would say it's a handy resource.

About the Author

Anatole France (pseudonym of Jacques Anatol Thibault, 1844- 1924) was the most prominent French man of letters of his time. France's style was precise, elegant, gentle, ironic, and humorous. Brilliantly-written and a superb old novel

Jealousy, theater, joy, church, affairs, revenge, tragedy, stalking, suicide, and much more can be found herein!

A young man is quite amourous toward a gregarious, young stage actress but she leads him on. He's also burdened with a solid competitor for her affections. The young man's emotional journey, tenoned with the shrewd and subtle humor of the work, will hold the reader's attention to the very end.

The author, Anatole France, (a pseudonym for Jacques Anatole Thibault, 1844-1924), was one of the great novelists of his day. He was a very prolific writer in the mainstream of French classicism.

"A Mummer's Tale," (aka, "Histoire Comique") was written in 1903 but remains timeless in its certainty to entertain those who enjoy a good, solid novel. If you're a bit apathetic about the dreary selection of novels on the current market, this fine story might just make you a huge fan of Anatole France.

A masterwork of readable late-1800s literature!

Here, we have a fine novel, not much heard of, by a Master of the light fiction genre. I don't know why it hasn't caught on like wildfire other than, perhaps, the academics at the various colleges have somehow overlooked it and have thus not promoted it to students.

It's the story of two prospective lovers of a woman, a vain theater actress, who is also a bit of a tease. One of these fellows lusts for her moreso than the second, (the more confident of the two), which leads the former down a path of dubious decisions. The actress, being a tease and not a big thinker as well, will leave MEN who read this book wishing to strangle her just a little and from time to time. *.*

But that is the beauty of this book -- the reader becomes engaged in the action from the very start. This is the Hallmark of France's craft-work.

This volume work pretty much offers up all the reasons that we read great fiction including, drama, love, religion, jealousy, and, in this instance, suicide -- a really shocking one.

So, about the time you feel that you've read all that is worth reading, try this one and you'll have found yet another. I really thoroughly enjoyed this one.

A non-programmers guide to a poweful program.

Like most of the programs attached to the Unix environment this
book takes the reader into a powerful and complex application.
The benefit of this volume is that the reader is given the chance
to learn just what the task at hand needs. By allowing the novice
to learn what needs to be done in the beginning, the book provides powerful
methods for success. In giving the reader a balence of easy to use
concepts backed by concise reference material almost any level of
skill can be accomodated.
Over all this work is an excellent blend of concept
and reference. For the beginner as well as the experienced Tex
user, this book should be on the "must read" list. As a reference it is ample for even
the most experienced user.

About the Author
Nancy A. Hewitt (Ph.D., University of Pennsylvania) is Professor of History and of Women’s and Gender Studies at Rutgers University. Her publications include Southern Discomfort: Women’s Activism in Tampa, Florida, 1880s-1920s, for which she received the Julia Cherry Spruill Prize from the Southern Association of Women Historians, Women’s Activism and Social Change: Rochester, New York, 1822-1872, and the edited volume No Permanent Waves: Recasting Histories of U.S. Feminism. She is currently working on a biography of the nineteenth-century radical activist Amy Post and a book that recasts the U.S. woman suffrage movement.

Steven F. Lawson (Ph.D., Columbia University) is Professor Emeritus of History at Rutgers University. His research interests include U.S. politics since 1945 and the history of the civil rights movement, with a particular focus on black politics and the interplay between civil rights and political culture in the mid-twentieth century. He is the author of many works including Running for Freedom: Civil Rights and Black Politics in America since 1941, Black Ballots: Voting Rights in the South, 1944-1969, and In Pursuit of Power: Southern Blacks and Electoral Politics, 1965-1982.

On philosophical, economic, legal, and practical grounds, Logan argues a compelling case for the private and commercial operation of prisons. He critically examines all objections raised by opponents, and concludes that while private prisons face many potential problems, they do so primarily because they are prisons, not because they are private. Historically, the record of private ownership and operation of corrections facilities has been bleak--ridden with political corruption, physical abuse of prisoners, and the single-minded pursuit of profits. This study demonstrates that this need not be the case. Critiquing the tendency to contrast private prisons with a hypothetical ideal, Logan instead compares them with existing public institutions, arguing that the potential problems attributed to private prisons are experienced by their public counterparts. The work examines ten sets of issues, including the propriety, cost, security, and quantity of prisons, to set out a strong case for the viability of proprietary prisons.

About the Author
Bhabatosh Banerjee Ph.D. is former Professor Department of Commerce and Dean Faculty of Commerce Social Welfare and Business Management University of Calcutta India. Currently he is Visiting Professor at Indian Institute of Management Calcutta. He has more than four decades of teaching experience at the postgraduate level. He worked as a Visiting Professor of Accounting in two reputed universities (both private and State) in the USA during 1995a"1997. He is the Editor of Indian Accounting Review and President of Indian Accounting Association (IAA) Research Foundation. Dr. Banerjee has authored several books including Financial Policy and Management Accounting 8th edition and Fundamentals of Financial Management both published by PHI Learning.
