Actually a juicy read!

The story is getting more juicy now. With their secret out to the news. How is Dante going to handle everything and will they end. I can't wait to see Sash's news of being pregnant going to make it worse and have Dante running for the hills. Best of all what is going happen to Tess once Dante finds out she was the blackmailer that leaked the pictures. Awesome can't wait for book 5!

Surprisingly interesting and easy to read for a textbook.

First off, let me say, this book is a textbook. If you are looking for a fun book to pick up and lose yourself in, this isn't it. But if you are looking for a book that will really help you understand how a young child, usually with no direct instruction, can go from being non-communicative at birth to being able to communicate in mostly correct and complete sentences by age four, this is for you.

I had to read this entire book, cover to cover, for a college class, and I did enjoy it. Yes, I was reading a textbook, but the material is interesting and the author puts in a LOT of real-life examples which really helped to keep me interested and engaged. I learn well through example, and every topic had one or more stories of experiments done on children or studies done on children to illustrate the concept being discussed. I loved this, as it really made the topics comprehensible and fascinating for me!

I also appreciated that the author presented multiple theories for everything. I'm not sure which theory Hoff subscribes to, because she presented a wide variety in a balanced way. I feel this gave me a fuller understanding of the field.

It did get dry at times. The author did go into detail on EVERYTHING. But that is because this is an introductory book covering a HUGE spectrum of information intended for those who have no background in it. So, for me, I needed that information. There was very little where I wished the author would just get on with it, in general if I got overwhelmed it was at the sheer amount of information contained in the pages.

This was, by far, my best text book this semester. It was accurate, it was interesting (for a textbook), and I feel like I have walked away with a lot of great information from reading it.

I'M USING THIS BOOK AS A TEXT FOR MY LINGISTICS CLASS, AND I FIND THAT IT'S QUITE DISORGANISED. ASSIGNED READINGS FOR A PARTICULAR TOPIC HAVE TO COME FROM PORTIONS OF DIFFERENT CHAPTERS BECAUSE OF THE WAY HOFF SET UP HER CHAPTERS.

This book is a well-written, easy read for Speech-Language Pathologists in training. I used it for an undergraduate leveling course and still use it as a reference every now and then in my Graduate program.

Disappointing - Not much new information in any book in this series

Disappointing. This series was originally announced that Tom Grant was writing a book, great. That turned into a three-part book series spread out over the course of more than a year. I pre-ordered all three (at a cost of about $75). Book 3 doesn't appear to be on Amazon yet so I can't review it. Every book in the series contains myriad typos (some substantial), not to mention factual inaccuracies. Many of which could have been caught by a decent editor. Given the repeated delays in publishing, I'm not sure why these books are so messy. Especially since this is a topic that the authors are trying to have taken seriously, it does not help their cause to put out such weak product.

Regarding content, the books in this series are heavy on the armchair-psychoanalysis in attempt to bolster their conviction that Courtney Love is a sociopathic murderer. I don't feel that's the best way to go about sharing the facts of this case. The facts should speak for themselves without having to resort to quoting from psychology textbooks.

If you've been following the case closely for years, don't look here for too much new information. Book 2 in this series contains some bits about how the authors feel that certain books and films (such as Heavier Than Heaven by Charles Cross and the documentary Hit So Hard about Patty Schemel) are used to spin the legend of Kurt Cobain's suicide. Book 3 contains some details about a very inconsequential meeting between Pat Smear and Tom Grant. You won't find any massive revelations that aren't already on the internet.

These books were marketed towards fans of the true crime genre. I think a single, dense book encompassing the details found in Tom Grant's overpriced, print-on-demand "Case Study Manual", as well as some of the material in this three-book series, would've been a much more concise and engrossing read. I don't feel there is much continuity between the three books in this "Murder at Lake Washington" series.

As someone who is extremely interested in all relevant information regarding this subject, I was let down consecutively three times with the publication of these books. I have somewhat higher hopes for the upcoming "Soaked in Bleach" film, but I don't really recommend any of the books in this series to anyone except die-hard completists.

Tom Grant was absent in a lot of the writing for Part 2, but the case needs to be re-opened

The second part is not as good as the first part, but I still read the whole thing in one or two sittings.

To me, this case boils down to the autopsy report. Whether or not you believe Kurt was depressed and suicidal is besides the point. The forensic evidence doesn't lie. All the speculation about the suicide note, Courtney's behavior, when Kurt bought the gun, and anything else is all just noise that naysayers can refute. The one thing people who disagree with the conspiracy theory can't refute is the 1.52 mg/liter of heroin/morphine in his blood (meaning an injection of at least 220 mgs of heroin) injected just before death that no other case has found to find someone surviving long enough to put their syringes away, cap them, wipe the gun clean and pick up a shotgun to shoot it. At the 14:00 minute mark of the video I posted above, Detective Ciesynski of the Seattle Police has now said that this was "an extreme amount of heroin. I don't think they've seen anybody overdose in our county at least, that had that much heroin inside him." He also said, "The amount of heroin that he injected was, like, ten times what normally was what anybody would have taken, even a heavy heroin user… and so, I believe he gave himself a fatal dose of black tar heroin…"
"...he killed himself because of the shotgun blast, but the heroin would have did the trick also…"

To me, that says it all. Let's just keep this simple and focus on this one fact, and maybe the case can be re-opened someday.

As far as part 2 of this book series, you can tell that Tom Grant was away consulting on the film Soaked in Bleach when this was written. Matthew Richer does his best to fill in, and there are some stories that I have never heard before, but I wouldn't give it 5 stars based on the book alone. I give it 5 stars based on the efforts of the investigation, and the fact that there are still people in search for the truth of what happened.

A good book from The Royal Diaries series.

It is 1743, and fourteen-year-old Sophie is a princess of Anhalt-Zerbst in Prussia. Sophie's father is not royalty, and her cruel mother, Princess Johanna Elizabeth, is obsessed with improving her own status through her daughter's marriage. To that end, she is determined to do everything possible in order to get Sophie chosen by Empress Elizabeth of Russia to marry her nephew Peter, heir to the throne. Soon, Sophie and her mother must travel to Russia in order to meet Empress Elizabeth. Sophie is indeed chosen to be Peter's wife, but her life changes completely as a result. She must adopt a new language, religion, and even a new name, Catherine.

I've enjoyed reading The Royal Diaries books for many years, and I was sad to see this would be the final book in the series. However, I was glad to see it would be written by one of my favorite authors from the series, Kristiana Gregory. I enjoyed this book a lot, but I do wish it had been longer and had more detail. I would still recommend this book to all fans of the series.

A Finale to the Royal Diary series.

Sophie is a 14 year old princess and lives her simple life in Zerbst, Prussia. She is constantly under the burdern of her abusive mother who not only damages her emotionally but physically too. Sophie's father doesn't carry royal blood and her desperate mother is a princess from a small royal family. Sophie's damaged personality is torn adn torn each day as her mother insults her and continuously presses her to marry princes so that her family will be related to 'real' royalty.

So one day, after many portraits of herself have been taken to various royalties abroad, Sophie is in shock when she finds that she had been chosen by the Empress of Russia- Elizabeth, to marry her nephew and become duchess and maybe one day queen of all Russia. Leaving her beloved family behind, Sophie and her mother leave to Moscow, unaware of the terrible journey across the ice-lands they would have to take.

But when they finally reach the city of snow- Moscow, Sophie realises that Elizabeth is dangerous and is in even more shock when her own mother plots against her. Sophie will have to hold her scheming mother and her tearing-apart life together, before both split. For Sophie, many things change: her language, her religion and most of all her name which is changed from Sophie to Catherine.

In this beautiful finale to the Royal Diary Series, Kristiana Greggory portrays Princess Catherine of Russia in her teenage years. When she had to leave her home-land to a place of hope and watch her whole life fall apart. I have loved nearly every book in this beautiful series and I farewell the Royal Diarys hoping the best for it's writers. All around the world, children's hearts have already been changed by the diarys of: Elizabeth I, Cleopatra VII, Isabel, Anastasia, Nzingha, Kaiulani, Victoria, Sondok, Jahanara, Eleanor, Kristina, Elisabeth, Kazunomiya, Green Jay, Redbird, Anacaona, Weetamoo, Marie-Anotinette, Mary of Scotts, Anacaona and Catherine. A beautiful story.

Basic overview with lots of interesting detail

For anyone interested in learning the basic facts about the Vikings, this little book is an excellent place to begin. Brondsted covers enough to give you a sense of the Vikings and their time. He also provides enough detail to spark interest in reading further.

This book was the perfect book for any school asignment. It gave very specific facts and dates. It only lacked in the fact that it was kind of boring. It gets more interesting as you go along though. Overall, it was a very good book.

About the Author
Henry Louis Gates, Jr. (Ph.D.Cambridge), is Alphonse Fletcher University Professor and Director of the W. E. B. Du Bois Institute for African and American Research, Harvard University. He is the author of Life Upon These Shores: Looking at African American History, 1513–2008; Black in Latin America; Tradition and the Black Atlantic: Critical Theory in the African Diaspora; Faces of America; Figures in Black: Words, Signs, and the Racial Self; The Signifying Monkey: A Theory of Afro-American Criticism; Loose Canons: Notes on the Culture Wars; Colored People: A Memoir; The Future of Race with Cornel West; Wonders of the African World; Thirteen Ways of Looking at a Black Man; and The Trials of Phillis Wheatley. Jennifer Burton (Ph.D. Harvard) is currently a visiting scholar at the University of California, San Diego, where she has taught courses on the debates within African American studies. Along with Henry Louis Gates Jr., Burton edited the 31-volume series African-American Women Writers, 1910-1940, and was the volume editor for The Prize Plays and Other One-Acts: Zora Neale Hurston, Eulalie Spence, Marita Bonner, and Others. She also contributed to The Norton Anthology of African American Literature, The Oxford Companion to African American Literature, and Great American Women. Her essays, fiction, and plays have appeared in publications from the Buffalo News to the Southeast Review. She has been a DuBois Fellow, a Mellon Fellow, and a Henry Luce Scholar.

Great Collection, but...

This collection is one of the best collections of African American discourse that have probably ever been collected, but I have one complaint. It does not include enough aspects of the debate within the African community on Africa, especially during Part V, the section on the Civil Rights Movement. In Part III, on the Great Migration and Black Renaissance, it mentions Garvey's Back to Africa movement and the emergence of the Pan-African movement with WEB Du Bois' conferences. In Part IV, it also doesn't mention the incredible response, both for and agianst, of the African American community to the 1935 Italian invasion of Ethiopia, which at that time was the last remaining independent African nation. If anything, African American interest in Africa increased during the civil rights movement as African nations gained their independence from colonialism during the 1950s and 1960s. In 1957, Ghana achieved its independence and Kwame Nkrumah invited African Americans to emigrate to his new nation and many took him up on his offer. African Americans reacted to the assassination of Patrice Lumumba in the Congo in 1961. Here is one of the famous lines from Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s, 1963 "Letter from Birmingham Jail," "The nations of Asia and Africa are moving with jetlike speed toward gaining political independence, but we still creep at horse-and-buggy pace toward gaining a cup of coffee at a lunch counter." While the letter is included, it is not placed within the context of King's anti-colonialism and transnational connections to Africa. King was also very active in the anti-apartheid movement. As other debates were spread out over more than one period, anti apartheid activism of the African American community could also be shown to exist from supporting the Defiance Campaign against Unjust Laws in 1952 to supporting economic sanctions against South Africa in the 1980s. Like other debates, these issues were not all one-sided, there were African Americans that argued that the struggle in the United States was more important than a struggle for independence half-a-world-away, for a group whom they did not consider their brethren.

While several good books; e.g., Proudly We Can Be Africans: Black Americans and Africa, 1935-1961, accomplish this objective in the secondary literature this was the chance to publish primary sources to reflect this debate within the black community.

Had more of these transnational connections been demonstrated in this collection it would be worth a five-star rating.

If you want to know African and African-American History and this is the best book though i don't know other books that are available. It is easy to read and easy to understand and you will be shock how much you learn. Its was delivered fast too.

Excellent Classroom Edition

"The Essential Rousseau" is an edition of, as its name suggests, Rousseau's most essential works, including his "Discourse on the Arts and Letters" and "Discourse on the Origins of Inequality" in their entirity, as well as excerpts from other major works, including "The Social Contract" and "The Savoyard Priest". The translation is clear and accurate, the selection of tests is appropraite and accurately reflects what I would consider to be essential. There's a good brief sketch of Rousseau's life and work in the beginning, and a quick introduction to each work. All in all, this is a fine edition for assignment in the classroom and for students.

Innacurate Account of the Truth

Lowell Bair, while providing the "essential" works of Rousseau, fails to provide an accurate account of what it was Rousseau truly wanted to say. Refer specifically to the Social Contract Book II, Chapters VI and VII, pertaining to the law and to lawgivers. Bair, through his own interest decides to cut out nearly every instance that Rousseau made regarding religion and God. As a religious man, Rousseau felt that it was extremly pertinent that religion, though it may cause conflict played an essential role in the formation of a state and the laws that bind it. For, there can really be no secular state. Now Bair, decided to cut this out, in several instances leaving the reader to only infer that religion was deep rooted in his writing. Whereas, In the true reading of the work, it is obviously clear. I think that this is a twisted version of the truth, and through reviews like the other one stated, that people who do not know but would like to know these writers will become blinded by authors who corrupt and throw their own "perspective" and "translations" into texts like the "Essential Rousseau" by Lowell Bair. You want to read the true account, read the original works, and even better in the original language it was meant to be read in!

This sixth shedra book by the Venerable Khenpo Rinpoches includes extensive teachings on the foundational text of the Nyingma school and Inner Tantras. The Mula Guhyagarbha Tantra, or Root Tantra of the Secret Essence, explains that buddhahood does not come from outside ourselves. We are not practicing to create something that is currently absent but will emerge at a later time-instead, we are simply discovering the true nature as it is. Therefore, the teachings describe ourselves, others, and the entire universe as originally inseparable from the spontaneously inherent divine mandala. Appearance, sound, and awareness are already pure from the beginning. They are in the enlightened status right now. Since the Glorious Guhyagarbha lays out this profound view in great detail, it is known as the "King of All Tantras," the "peak of all yanas," the "source of all doctrinal schools," and the "universal explanation of all scriptures." It is the "final intention, thought, and realization of all buddhas," the "ultimate result of all yanas," the "great passage of all the Victorious Ones of the three times," and the "supreme highway of all yogis and yoginis." Together, these are known as the "Eight Greatnesses" of this tantra. Along the course of history, many great masters and practitioners have achieved full realization by engaging in the Secret Essence teachings. Today we are connecting with this very same path by studying, contemplating, and meditating on the nugget essence of the Dharma through these instructions. We are finally discovering the profound and mysterious secret that has been hidden from us for such a long time: the guhya garbha, or "secret essence," of the inherent nature of reality.

A Monumental Achievement is this Splendid Book which Opens the Gate to Wisdom

The Khenpos as teachers have created a monumental legacy to bring the King of All the Tantras to the West. They have opened the Gate of Vajrayana Buddhism for us and we just have to step into the pages of this book and then practice and actualize their precious teachings. The history of the Guhyagarbha Tantra as well as Tantra in general is presented. The outer and inner tantras are discussed. Particularly interesting are the teachings on the Bardo or Afterlife. Everyone wants to know what happens when we die and here, in this book, step by step explanations are discussed. The Zitro practices of the Peaceful and Wrathful Deities which appear after death are also fascinating topics. My favorite teaching is the culminating chapter towards the end of the book which guides students to practice this tantra which is also known as The Secret Magical Net of Illusion. This precious book by the Khenpos gives us the backround history, view, path and the ultimate way to enter the gate and pass through this samsara net of illusion. It is a monumental achievement in Vajrayana Buddhism and the Khenpos' gift of Dharma to the West. Pema Gadron

THE GREAT GUYAGARBHA, KING OF ALL TANTRAS! HO!!!

The Great Guyagarbha Tantra is the first direct teaching (first oral and then on paper) that directly teaches, DEFINES, and brings us that much closer to realizing what we actually are, and what all reality actually is. It is considered fundamental by ALL MASTERS OF ALL SCHOOLS of VAJRAYANA BUDDISM. To use the term “revelation” in its effect on me, is not over-stating or dramatic because its purpose is just that; to reveal to us the True-Nature that is the only absolute condition for everything. Now how on Earth can a teacher or teachers convey that?! Well, that’s where masters come into the picture. The authors of these Teachings on the Great Guyagarbha Tantra, are the Venerable Khenchen Palden Sherab Rinpoche and Khenpo Tsewang Dongyal Rinpoche. They speak in a way that is completely authentic to the teachings yet so beautiful, so simple, so straight forward. (LOL! I am almost in tears with appreciation at this very moment!) Yet also, because Khenpo Tsewang speaks English so beautifully, it is HE who is speaking to us in his own voice and at the same time translating Khenchen’s (Khenpo’s brother) native Tibetan in a perfect and enlightening manner. I know this because I have been fortunate to recieved their teachings in person. Alas, (and TRULY as equally important to mention here), is the editing. I mean, this is a book, but it sounds like I am describing an audio recording! That, my friends, is where the magic of the current editing and translation team of Pema Samye Ling (PSL) come into the picture. (dang…I’m about to get teary again!…Abide, abide…ok, I’m cool.) Anyway, originally these teachings consisted of two summer sessions for groups of students on retreat. The teachings were recorded culminating into countless hours of audio. That’s when this team of EDITING-ARTISTS created a seamless stream that feels as if you are ACTUALLY THERE. Really, this was my experience the first time I read it. I cannot even begin to get into the actual teachings here. They are too vast and perfect for a review but again I will say that it is THE fundamental teaching revealing to us the True-Nature of Phenomena exactly As-It-Is. It is currently my own daily study and will continue to be so indefinitely. I should also mention that each teaching, within this Teaching, is an entire meditation unto itself. So, there are probably a hundred (if not hundreds) of meditations in here. Any person along the Path should BUY THIS BOOK, absorb it, and allow it to naturally progress your realization.

The other two reviews existing at this time are exellent and I will just add my confirmation. Two weeks ago I finished another book from the same authors (Key to Opening the wisdom Door of Anuyoga). That book was a real blessing for me and I keep it and the authors in the highest esteem. I am delighted to have the opportunity to spend more time with them. It is REAL Quality Time! Having said that, I would like to add, that the level of these teaching is comparable to e.g. Albert Einstein's " Theory of Relativity" , so you would have to know a little bit about physics and mathematics already otherways the blessing will not materialize. To know in that context means embodied experience and knowledge, not just intellectual knowledge! As a matter of fact the loosing of the net of reference of the intellect is the whole point!

Sam Ruby is a prominent software developer who is a co-chair of the W3C HTML Working Group and has made significant contributions to many of the Apache Software Foundation's open source software projects. He is a Senior Technical Staff Member in the Emerging Technologies Group of IBM.

Dave Thomas, as one of the authors of the Agile Manifesto, understands agility. As the author of "Programming Ruby," he understands Ruby. And, as an active Rails developer, he knows Rails.

David Heinemeier Hansson is the creator of the Rails framework.

Lacks coverage of new features

The product description for AWDWR4 includes this paragraph:

"Rails 4 introduces a number of user-facing changes, and the ebook has been updated to match all the latest changes and new best practices in Rails. This includes full support for Ruby 2.0, controller concerns, Russian Doll caching, strong parameters, Turbolinks, new test and bin directory layouts, and much more."

Shockingly, AWDWR4 includes no discussion of some of the aforementioned changes, including Turbolinks and strong parameters, which are the first two subjects I searched for in my copy of AWDWR4. The authors simply included a link to Turbolinks' GitHub repo, and there is literally not one mention of the term "strong parameters" in the whole book! AWDWR4 seems to be a hastily-updated version of AWDWR3, which I also own.

If you already know Rails 3, I recommend that you not waste your time or money on AWDWR4. After realizing that AWDWR4 is worthless, I bought PDF copies of Rails 4 in Action and The Rails 4 Way. (The print versions of these books are available for pre-order at Amazon.) These two books are currently in beta, but they're already over 700 pages long and they include sections devoted to strong parameters, Turbolinks, etc.

In the past, I bought Pragmatic books without bothering to evaluate them beforehand because their books had always been high-quality. This seems to no longer be the case, and I won't buy another Pragmatic book until one is recommended to me by someone I trust. Pragmatic joins O'Reilly in this regard.

Update (2014-01-22):

In response to a comment on my review, I compared the indexes in AWDWR3 and AWDWR4. What motivated me to compare the indexes was the fact that AWDWR4's index doesn't include entries for either strong parameters or Turbolinks, which is surprising for a Rails 4 book. I checked the first pages of both indexes and here's what I found:

AWDWR3: Action Controller, 309, 321-332
AWDWR4: Action Controller, 309, 319-330
Same number of pages. (These are the pages in AWDWR4 that should have included discussion about strong parameters.)

Good for beginners

This is the second book on Rails that I purchased to learn new features in Rails 4 (the first one being Ruby on Rails Tutorial - I bought the paper copy which covers Rails 3 but the free online version covers Rails 4). As someone relatively new to Rails, I found this book easy to follow. I tried all the sample code and it worked without any problems. The explanations accompanying code is clear for the most part. Since I already learned the Rails way of doing things in Ruby on Rails Tutorial book, the main value addition in this book for me was in Part III - Rails in Depth - a lot is discussed and several ideas tossed around for someone to use in a real project.

The main downside of this book is that some of the treatment is superficial. For example, an authentication mechanism is developed in the book which is good for illustrative purposes but it's not replaced with a relevant gem that's ready to use (such as devise). This book uses MiniTest for the most part for automated tests. In my work place MiniTest is considered to be too basic in terms of functionality/scope and therefore cucumber/rspec/capybara are used instead. This book barely mentions these gems and capybara is not mentioned at all. Another thing to note is that this book does not use TDD but develops tests as after the fact - which is not necessarily bad in itself (depending on your style of development) but something to be aware of.

If you are a beginner to Rails, you can checkout either this book or Ruby on Rails Tutorial book - both will get you started. If you have preference towards TDD, then go with Ruby on Rails Tutorial. Personally I liked the TDD style of Ruby on Rails Tutorial. I suspect that neither of these two books will be very useful to intermediate/advanced Rails developers.

A great starter for a rails noob

I have some experience for C# .net web development as a business information technology student. I'm a complete noob with practically zero knowledge of ruby and ruby on rails. Regardless I find this book very intuitive to follow, and I think if you know any object oriented language to some degree, you can pick this up and start learning ruby and rails easily at the same time.

To make the point clear, I think this book is NOT for total newbies due to the way many concepts are just thrown around without explanation, but great for those who know the basic programming concepts already and just want to read something that makes them see the big picture of rails and get started as fast as they can.

I think I won't be going back to .NET for a long time..
