Well, I thoroughly enjoyed this book as well as the first book in the series. What I didn't enjoy though was the numberous errors that should have been caught by proofreaders. Still it was a good read and I plan on reading the third book.

New genetic evidence strongly suggests a single origin for modern humans in Africa. The authors argue that, capable and intelligent as the Neanderthals were, they proved no match for the better-organized, better-equipped newcomers, and died out.

Compared with Erik Trinkhaus and Pat Shipman's The Neandertals ( LJ 12/92), which traces the history of Neanderthal discoveries, this book is more concerned with current interpretations of the fossil record. English anthropologists Stringer and Gamble hope to settle the controversy over the Neanderthals' proper branch on humanity's family tree by taking their case to a general audience. They marshall the evidence in favor of the "Out of Africa 2" scenario, contending that Neanderthal populations in Europe and the Middle East were replaced by a second African migration between 130,000 and 50,000 years ago. Neanderthals, therefore, are not directly ancestral to modern humans. The authors make a strong case for their interpretations, but they offer little more than a caricature of competing theories. Still, this is an important and readable book, with many good illustrations. Recommended for academic and public libraries.

Brilliant

Having only a cursory knowledge about human pre-history, I asked a colleague in the anthropology department for a good primer. He gave me this. It was a veritable cornicoupia of information, even as the authors sought to provide their own answers to quesitons of acadmeic controversey.

The central question Stringer and Gamble seek to answer is: are modern humans kin to Neaderthals, or are we distantly related? In answering this, readers are treated to a briefing on the ice age world of the Lower and Middle Paleolithic, the relation of Neanderthals to other early humans, the way in which Neanderthals have been understood (and seen) by science and the public, before the book really hits its stride in disucssing the archaeology of Neanderthal sites and what they tell us about these early humans.

The authors belive that modern humans are related to (rather than directly from) Neanderthals, and that by the Upper Paleolithic, were being replaced by modern humans coming out of Africa ("Out of Africa II"). The evidence in support of this is strong, although not overwhelming: mtDNA (mitochondrial DNA) as well as behavioural data are primarily used.

In all, it was a worthwhile and fascinating read, and certainly provides more depth on the specific case of Neanderthals than other books on early humans.

The authors really do a great job in doing a detailed study of Neanderthals, their lives and their world. They catalogue the fossils found, examine how we know what we know from the bones, tools and even the ash from the fires.
The only problem is that the book was published in 1993-1994 and does not take into account later DNA tests and the four-year-old child who lived five thousand years after the last of the Neanderthals SHOULD of died (found in 1999)who showed signs of interbreeding between modern humans and Neanderthals. So, while the conclusion in the book that we did not come from Neanderthals may not be correct (and still open to debate), the chapters dealing in detail with Neanderthal tools, camp sites, society, art and burial are a must for people interested in the subject...

I use this book nearly every day to help define a potential abnormality on plain films. I am honestly amazed at how someone took the time to gather and organize such a vast collection of radiographs. I would not venture into radiology practice without a copy of Keats nearby.

The title is the best review for this product as it is what it is. A collection of jazz carols that allows the instrumentalist (or vocalist) play along. Great fun for those of us who no longer play in bars or bands but want to jazz out every once and a while.

Year 'Round Fun for Christmas

Hal Leonard has done it again with this tasteful mix of Christmas fast tempo classics, ballads, and waltz. One of my favorite tunes has always been the swing jazz rendition, "Let it Snow!, Let it Snow!", by Count Bassie with the tenor sax solo as played. At first I was skeptical with salsa used instead, but the backing band is well versed and now has become my favorite tune in the book. The book has a mix of fast and slow. "Rudolph" is fast swing, "Chestnuts Roasting on an Open Fire" is slow ballad, giving the playing improvisationist a wide variety of genres for the listening ear. This book is excellent for the upcoming artist or the accomplished pro for fun playing.

Soldiers' Daughters

I hadn't read the previous Soldiers' Wives and it seems likely that there are common characters. In this book the daughters of two officers go to Sandhurst, only one of them is a little unstable. Sam, short for Samantha, is an only child and motherless girl who wants to win her dad's love. While Michelle has been wild since school days and sees the army as another kind of acting out against the norm.

The story mainly follows officers and their wives, including Maddy who has a baby and is pregnant again, coping with moves between barrack towns and a husband who is absent suspiciously often to coach a rowing team. There's a nice dolly bird who is not an officer and seems to have joined because the army has lots of fit men and needs typists.

Some of the characters are sent to an exercise in Kenya in the latter part of the book but it's seldom we see anything so exciting as a shot getting fired, let alone mention of combat service. The army, including the REME which is the focus, seems just a job and a way of life. People get all excited and curious because one of the other ranks actually passed some junior school exams. Implying that most soldiers are thick, it seems.

Maybe I've read too many SAS memoirs but the contrast couldn't be greater. If you don't know the jargon - what a colour sergeant is, for example - you often won't be told. There's no suggestion of combat. It's just a day job with a lot of fitness training and saluting. Nobody's life depends on anyone doing their job properly, except out on exercise when the soldiers come across as woefully unprepared and uneducated about survival or co-ordination. The women are all far too preoccupied with makeup and men. I'm not saying this isn't accurate; I'm just wondering what they add to a combat unit. There's the barest hint that gay men are accepted now, but at the same time they are not out and proud so they would probably still get a tough time. Read Soldiers' Daughters for what's probably a good look inside the life in a barracks town. You might like to compare it with 'The General' by Patrick Coogan about a female officer whose ambition it is to make general.
