Great collection of through-provoking articles on gender and anthropology
By Steph D.
If you have no interest whatsoever in the vast diversity of human culture and the controversial roles of gender in all societies past and present then yes, this will be a boring book for you. People giving this book a bad rating are just not interested in the topic. I am an anthropology student and find it all fascinating, so this book to me is a great resource. Every article had me reconsidering core values and ideals as well as stereotypes that I grew up accepting. The articles are fairly easy for the average person to read and are short enough to read in one sitting.

The World's Gendered Cultures
By DJ Buddha
If you're simply a slacker/hater who is upset because you had to purchase this book for a class, get a grip and save us the negative reviews. You probably couldn't understand all those "big" words, much less the theoretical considerations a volume like this presents.

If, however, you would like to make an "A" in your gender studies or anthropology of gender class or just looking for a broadly themed variety of gender based research, this is one great resource, assigned or not. Brettell and Sargent have compiled a wonderfully rich collection of ethnographic studies, articles which will help the erudite reader better understand the complexities of the culturally constructed aspects of gender. I'll be keeping mine for further reference as I head off to graduate school. It was worth every penny.

I was going to sell this book knowing I wouldn't ...
By marie r.
I was going to sell this book knowing I wouldn't just start reading it over breakfast but once more, I decided to keep it. This is stuff you don't see anywhere else without serious digging. The articles are written by various researchers, about a broad range of topics relating to gender, from female land ownership to men who live with prostitutes and bodily care customs. It is a large overview of many studies on gender. I read this book for an anthropology class and although it was rugged material to summarize, it was very interesting. Here is the evidence that we have made too many assumptions about gender in our present culture. Groups all over the world show anything is possible and always changing.
