About the Author
Dr. Philip S. Callahan is a philosopher as well as a top-grade scientist. An internationally famous entomologist and ornithologist, he has been responsible for breakthrough discoveries in both areas.

He is also an explorer who has walked across mainland China and the Syrian Desert, observing the intricate ways of man and nature wherever he went.

He entered the U.S. Army Air Force in 1942, and served two years in the European Theater of Operations during World War II. Hiking around the world after he war, he worked as a freelance photographer and writer. Later, he attended Fordham University and received his B.A. and M.S. degrees from the University of Arkansas and his Ph.D. from Kansas State University. He served as assistant professor of the Entomology Department at Louisiana State University and later joined the U.S. Department of Agriculture, Southern Grain Insects Research Laboratory as Project Leader for Insect Biophysics. He was also Professor of Entomology on the graduate faculty of the University of Georgia. In 1969 he transferred to USDA Insect Attractant and Behavior Laboratory at Gainesville, Florida. Callahan served as a full professor on the graduate faculty of the University of Florida, and on the staff of The Olive W. Garvey Center for the Improvement of Human Functioning, Inc. as an infrared systems and low energy consultant.

His research involved the utilization of nonlinear far infrared radiation by biological systems and its applications to insect control and medicine. He has developed theories of insect communication based on the waveguide characteristics of insect spines and has postulated that such spines are thermoelectret-coated dielectric waveguide aerials with the ability to receive short wavelength IR and microwave frequencies. His work in biophysics might best be called studies in insect molecular bioelectronics.

He is the author of more than 100 scientific papers and numerous books, including: My Search for Traces of God; A Walk in the Sun; Nature's Silent Music; Ancient Mysteries, Modern Visions; and Tuning in to Nature.

NO practical or useful information

I bought this book because I am a gardener and am always interested in new, possibly useful ways to garden better. I believe in the role of energy and frequencies in enhancing health, so I was hoping to find something useful to add to my knowledge. Unfortunately, there is NONE in this book, in spite of the author believing it will "save the world's agriculture". He has proven through his experiments that energies exist. He has created a $400 meter to measure them (which obviously is much better than the existing $4,000 meters for the average gardener or farmer). He says these energies exist in SOME rocks, particularly volcanic ones, but that they vary significantly based on the origin of the rock, so you can't just buy granite dust or Azomite or whatever and put it on your garden and expect results. He says that 60-70% of the world's agricultural land is deficient in this energy, which is required to release the nutrients in the soil. But most of the book is about how he discovered and measures these energies, pretty much Greek if you don't understand radio waves, etc. I kept waiting for his conclusions or recipe or recommendations about how to use this information, but it never came.

I think Dr. Callahan is/was a fascinating person and that he probably made a major contribution by trying to reconnect chemistry, physics and biology as they relate to agriculture. But as a gardener, I found this book to be totally useless.

If you have never read Philip Callahan you are missing out on the most brilliant insight of earth and insects availabke. Phip Callahan is the modern day Thomas Edison. Also, read his book, Tuning into Nature. It will change the way you view your world.

Agree - one of the best books on world politics

My wife, actually attended courses with Organski at U of Michigan and she kept his book and passed it to me. Very clear and insightful framework for understanding the dynamics of the rise and fall of great powers. My edition was 1968 and Organski accurately layed out the likely evolution of the Soviet Union, China, EU and the US. Excellent background to the tensions now taking place in E Europe and the way China is engaging the world as it grows in economic power. Without prejudice, outlines the challenges that totalitarian and party-dominated governments present to democracies. Really a must read!

The best book ever written about world politics.

This book was first published in 1958 and predicted, with amazing clarity, the future changes in the world. This book is an update and was published in 1969. Dr. A.F.K. Organski came up with the fundamental theories which explain about how nations change over time. He explains the causes of war and how countries evolve over time. It is the complete explanation of how the world works. In my opinion it is the best book ever written !!!!!!!

About the Author
Henry Martin is Professor of Music at Rutgers University--the country's only program that grants a degree in jazz scholarship. He has enjoyed a dual career as an award-winning composer-pianist and a music theorist specializing in jazz and the Western tonal tradition. Albany Records released his SELECTED PIANO MUSIC CD in 2010, and in 2004 Bridge Records released his CD PRELUDES AND FUGUES, with Martin performing. He is coeditor of the ANNUAL REVIEW OF JAZZ STUDIES, and his books include CHARLIE PARKER AND THEMATIC IMPROVISATION, COUNTERPOINT, and ESSENTIAL JAZZ: THE FIRST 100 YEARS, 2e.

Keith Waters is Associate Professor of Music Theory at the University of Colorado at Boulder. He has written extensively on jazz improvisation and analysis. A jazz pianist, he has performed in concerts, jazz festivals, and clubs throughout the United States, Europe, and Russia. Prof. Waters has recorded with VSOP Records, and his playing has been a featured topic in JAZZ PLAYER magazine. Among his recent recordings is a Chet Baker tribute with former Baker sideman Phil Urso and West Coast trumpeter Carl Saunders. The current chair of the Jazz Special Interest Group of the Society for Music Theory, he just completed a book on the studio recordings of Miles Davis' second great quintet.

A terrible book, for so many reasons...

How do you write a "100 years of jazz history" book, and not include Buddy Rich or Joe Pass?!? Really?! Arguably the world's greatest jazz drummer ever (or greatest drummer, period) and one of the best jazz guitarists ever... that's almost criminal. And where's Victor Wooten?

I have many other gripes about this book, but those are two of the big ones for me. The writer also omitted many famous female jazz artists, and didn't even really bother to include them on the history 'timelines' throughout the book. Sexist, much? At the same time, he manages to mention the Rolling Stones, the Doors, etc... because yeah, they're so jazzy!

I hate this book, hehe. It's also just not written very well, in my opinion. At least I get to watch the Ken Burns Jazz series as part of the curriculum... unlike this book, that series was actually done very well (and by people who actually knew what they were talking about).

At least I bought it used for $30. Even that seems expensive.

Great Jazz Overview

Good coverage of jazz concepts. Includes jazz history, biographies, great listening guides, 6-page overview of jazz music basics, glossary, lists of videos, albums, books. Visually really nice. The best overview of jazz that I've seen. The downsides are that it's expensive, and that the included CD doesn't have the audio recordings on it; it's an 'audio primer' of extremely short snippets. Buy the CDs of the 'listening guide' musical selections separately.

I purchased the First 100 years of Jazz as a class requirement. I was not really a fan of jazz until I heard this CD. I really enjoyed the variety of jazz choices. Great introduction into the world of jazz. I highly recommend this for anyone that is open to all styles of music.

Loved it

I have bought many books from amazon but this is the first time I felt compelled to submit a review of a book. Outnumbered is a quick read and it gives a refreshing, unique perspective from an individual who stands so boldly and courageously in what she believes in. As a grad student surrounded by a group of "tolerant scholars", I was inspired and encouraged by Jedediah's responses and reactions to these encounters. I highly recommend this book, no matter what your political affiliation is.

I have to applaud Jedediah Bila for standing up for her beliefs, even in the face of what is a seemingly overwhelming opponent (I use that term somewhat loosely as we are all Americans). I have watched her on FNC for about a year now, I would guess and I always enjoy her opinions, whatever the topic and I admire her for not taking an abrasively adversarial stance, instead being forceful but respectful. I like that.

This book is not so much a platform for her sociopolitical beliefs but rather an experience of the time leading up to the 2008 election and after Obama was sworn in to the Office of President, ending in March of that year, with a brief update in our current year. It is filled with episodes of how people she encountered through the day reacted to her Palin pin, or how she doesn't look like a conservative or how her 'friends' reacted to her coming out as a conservative. I found those very revealing and, sometimes, very sad.

It is basically a diary and it is interesting how often during that time politics played a huge role in our lives. Miss Bila relays that in a casual, effective way, sometimes funny (the restribution of muscle tone was hilarious!), always interesting in her daily adventures, but I was really quite shocked at how many teachers used their positions to persuade their students to think along a very specific political line, mostly Democrat. I am glad my teachers did not do that. Miss Bila clearly wants school to be a process where the kids learn how to make up their own minds about the issues and not just be told what to say and what to think, ala Orwell's 1984. Though she is no longer teaching, she does give me hope for the future teachers in America.

If I have any complaint, and why I took off half a star, it is because the book is too short. I wanted to read more. When I was finished, I felt somewhat disappointed that it had ended already. I guess that is a criticism but also a compliment, in a way.

A Pea In A Huge Pod: She has to be weird

I loved the book. And at the same time think "This lady is weird." Weird in the sense that she has to be if she remains in such a hostile place to anything conservative. And she definitely is conservative. Weird in that she lives among so many "progressives" that call on everyone to be tolerant - except they are not, unless you agree with their socialistic world view . Miss Bila is a great writer and very witty. This short book reflects that...my only complaint.....I wanted to read more. I highly recommend it....what are you waiting for....get it!
