Mechanics on a sound thermodynamic basis

Mechanician Gerard Maugin goes about describing the thermodynamic basis of continuum mechanics, focusing on small-strain elasto-plasticity and fracture, and taking a mathematical viewpoint. You would do well to have a background in continuum mechanics and possibly some functional analysis; Maugin makes heavy use of tensors and their accompanying indicial notation, and there are proofs that enlist the help of variational principles. That being said, I found this book to be an enlightening and thorough introduction to the topic. I would rate the prose somewhere on the above-average level of readability and reader engagement, but it isn't spectacular (so read this one with a cup of coffee close by). I enjoyed the brief history of each topic discussed, complete with references to the original papers (Hill, Rice, Woehler, E. Lee, Westergaard, von Mises, Prandtl, Barre de Saint-Venant, etc etc).

Those pesky laws of thermodynamics always apply, and so Maugin goes about explaining elasto-plasticity (mostly in metals) by using work and energy and the conservation thereof. Most of the time you can get away without due diligence for the first and second laws, but not all the time. For example, you will find a heat source at a crack tip, which is coupled to the work done by opening the crack itself. Plastic behavior (at the continuum/macroscale level) is defined to obey the laws of thermodynamics in the absence of better theories, and Maugin reviews the analysis behind such treatments. The link to thermal behavior is with some energy potential (usually Helmholtz free energy), which leads to a discussion of coupled thermo-mechanical problems. Given the nature of such a coupled beast, the discussion is rather terse compared to other topics. The largest shortcoming here is the treatment of numerical solutions of thermo-mechanical problems, but this is likely due to the book being nearly 20 years old. If you're on the market for information about thermomechanics, this book is right up your alley (even though it is a few years old)...but be aware that the audience is graduate-level engineers and applied mathematicians.

This book is very hard to understand particularly because of the strange notaion used. The subject of the book is very good, and I couldnt find a parallel book anywhere else, so I am still diggning hard to get few ideas across.

About the Author

Daniel Girdano, PhD, has held the position of professor at the Universities of Maryland, Utah, Wyoming, Texas A & M, Boston University, and The Pennsylvania State University. He is currently professor and faculty mentor for Walden University. As director of the psychophysiology research laboratory at the University of Maryland he used research in biofeedback, counseling, and relaxation training to pioneer the comprehensive study of stress management. He has authored or co-authored 40 health and fitness textbooks and over 50 articles.

Dorothy E. Dusek, PhD, has been professor at San Francisco State, Worcester State College, the University of Maryland, University of Utah, University of Wyoming, and Metropolitan State College in Denver. She has written over 30 books on the topics of nutrition, fitness, stress management, weight management, smoking cessation, health counseling, behavior change, communication, psychosomatic medicine, and others. She has a private counseling practice in Winter Park Colorado.

George S. Everly, Jr., PhD, ABPP is Professor of Psychology, Loyola College in Maryland, Associate Professor of Psychiatry, The Johns Hopkins School of Medicine, and a member of the Johns Hopkins Center for Public Health Preparedness at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health.

This was a required textbook for a psychology course I took last year. The text is well-written, well-organized, and easy for anyone to understand. I'm a psychiatric nurse and have kept this book because it contains some great bits of information and several exercises that I've passed on to my patients and used in group therapy sessions.

About the Author
Jessica Utts is Professor of Statistics at the University of California at Irvine. She received her B.A. in math and psychology at SUNY Binghamton, and her M.A. and Ph.D. in statistics at Penn State University. Aside from MIND ON STATISTICS, she is the author of SEEING THROUGH STATISTICS and the co-author with Robert Heckard of STATISTICAL IDEAS AND METHODS both published by Cengage Learning. Jessica has been active in the Statistics Education community at the high school and college level. She served as a member and then chaired the Advanced Placement Statistics Development Committee for six years, and was a member of the American Statistical Association task force that produced the GAISE (Guidelines for Assessment and Instruction in Statistics Education) recommendations for Elementary Statistics courses. She is the recipient of the Academic Senate Distinguished Teaching Award and the Magnar Ronning Award for Teaching Excellence, both at the University of California at Davis. She is also a fellow of the American Statistical Association, the Institute of Mathematical Statistics, and the American Association for the Advancement of Science. Beyond statistics education, Jessica's major contributions have been in applying statistics to a variety of disciplines, most notably to parapsychology, the laboratory study of psychic phenomena. She has appeared on numerous television shows, including LARRY KING LIVE, ABCNIGHTLINE, CNN MORNING NEWS, and 20/20, and most recently appears in a documentary included on the DVD with the movie SUSPECT ZERO.

Robert F. Heckard is a senior lecturer in statistics at the Pennsylvania State University, where he has taught for more than 30 years. He has taught introductory and intermediate applied statistics to more than 15,000 college students. Bob has been awarded several grants to develop multimedia and web-based instructional materials for teaching statistical concepts. Aside from MIND ON STATISTICS, he is the co-author of STATISTICAL IDEAS AND METHODS (first edition, 2006, Cengage Learning). As a consultant, he is active in the statistical analysis and design of highway safety research and has frequently been a consultant in cancer treatment clinical trials.

The writing implies that the hardest part about being an attorney, the decisive factor in any given case, is who can yell "Objection!" the loudest. Fairly little time is devoted to anything genuinely mysterious or procedural--the story concerns itself with ramen-eating contests and stolen lunches--making this a huge disappointment for anyone expecting real legal action. It works fairly well as a comedy, though, with the occasional self-referential jab ("That's not cool enough for a main character!" It's great, but don't be misled

This is something a lot of Phoenix Wright (or just Ace Attorny fans in general) have been wanting. More of Phoenix, Maya, and the others. However, don't be fooled by the title. While it is apparently an official collection of manga stories, it's not exactly written by anyone involved with the games themselves. In that same vein, each story tends to have a different art style, and some of them don't always portray beloved characters (such as Mia or Edgeworth) quite as nicely as they were in games. It's not the best in the world (that would have been something made by the people at Capcom), but for us starving fans who are waiting endlessly for the new Edgeworth game, it certainly helps pass the time.

Great manga for Phoenix Wright fans and newcomers too!

This manga was well worth the wait! I am a devout fan of the Ace Attorney video game series by Capcom; other fans of the series like myself will definitely love this manga. The manga picks up after Ace Attorney 3: Phoenix Wright Trials and Tribulations. It keeps the storyline of the video games in various mini chapters and events. It is NOT a retelling of the video games, but rather a continuation of sorts. Don't expect a full blown drawn out crime investigation like you would in the video games; this manga does however have some crime investigations although they are brief.

The main purpose of this manga in my opinion, is to bring out the life and personalities of all the beloved characters in the Phoenix Wright series. You will get to know your favorite characters even more and find out small little details about their past and background. The characters' quirks and personalities are akin to those of the games.

Being familiar with the series will come in handy when references are made to the video games, as well as the ever enjoyable inside jokes. I found myself laughing out loud quite a few times. It is full of subtleties that a lot of Phoenix Wright fans would pick up on. This manga does the video game series justice!

For those that are not familiar with the Ace Attorney video game series, I would still recommend that you check this manga out. This manga follows Phoenix Wright, a rookie defense attorney and his friends in his journey to defend his clients in court. It is packed with humor and the mysteries of crime scene investigations. You will also get to know the characters on more light-hearted chapters as well. By the time you have finished reading this manga, you will most definitely be intrigued enough to pick up a game or two.

However, be warned that if you are in fact curious about the Ace Attorney video game series, this manga does have a few spoilers since it does deal with the storyline of the first three games in the series.

Now, the art is definitely interesting in this manga. You will find different art styles from various artists; it is actually quite intriguing to see Phoenix Wright and company drawn in each artist's personal style. If you are a fan of the original video game art style, you will find a couple of chapters that ressemble it as well.

All in all, I highly recommend this book for anyone curious or interested in the Ace Attorney video game series. It is a refreshing read packed with humor. I found that the short chapters make it easy to pick up and read anywhere and anytime. I have yet to find a flaw in this book, other than the fact that I was so hooked I wish it had been longer.

Good Manga but Not What I Expected

This was an OK manga but the story is not at all canon (sp?) with the Phoenix Wright universe. Every chapter is also written and drawn by different mangakas so all of the artsyles are different. I was really hoping that it'd be done by one person (whoever drew the artwork on the cover) but unfortunately it didn't happen.

Still worth a read if you're a Phoenix Wright fan.

If you are ready to really think about your life and where you are going, try this book on for size

This gentle, introspective, and thought-provoking book doesn't shirk the hard questions or seek to wrap things up neatly for you, as many career guides try to with their tests and checklists. Instead, Feinberg trusts that if you are willing to take the time and energy to ask yourself the hardest questions and face your life, that you can make a real success of it.

This is a Christian-based book, so the author does quote a few bible verses and talk about how God might lead you in certain directions. It might not be the best choice for a non-Christian, but at the same time the religion isn't heavy-handed or off-putting, so if you think that her approach might be for you, don't let the religious aspect turn you off to it.

The strength of this book is in the thought-provoking questions she asks. Each chapter is divided into sections for each step in your journey of figuring out where you want to go in your life and career, and each section has a lot of material about things we should ask ourselves, pitfalls to consider, and new ways of thinking about it all. There are also some wonderful personal stories of people who have found themselves at a crossroads and have made either a mistake to learn from or a good choice to try to emulate.

I already have a career that I find satisfying and joyful, but I often wonder "What if?", since I have so many passions that could be taken in a money-making direction. This book helped me consider a lot of the benefits to following a few of my dreams, while providing the necessary reality checks.

This would be an excellent book for a bible study group or a group of under-30's to read together. Not only does each chapter have a lot to discuss, but the end of the book has some very personally affecting discussion questions that could be effectively used in a one-on-one or group setting.

Very disappointed in this book

I tried to give this book, and the author, the benefit of the doubt by continuing to read through at least the first 80 pages. I was really looking for help on how to shape my future, find my passion, etc. and thought maybe if I kept reading I would be inspired and find my way on a surprising path. Instead, the message I got from the book, and the author, was that if I prayed and waited, someday God would let me know what to do. That was all I essentially got from the book. It was hard to find anything substantial (to me) between the comparisons to Christ, quotes from the bible, and attempts to sound hip by randomly referencing reality television shows.

I understand how Christians or those that have a religious background might find this book inspiring, however I was put off on two fronts. First, nowhere on the amazon site, or in the explanation about the book, or on the book itself, was it made clear this was a religious based book. Judge me how you'd like, but I would never have bought this book had I known that so I feel tricked. Second, the content of the book was so weak that the only advice the author could give, as I stated earlier, was to pray about it and someday you'll get your answer. Suffice it to say I was disappointed in the lack of real advice or guidance and was also disappointed in the overall quality of the book.

Real & Really Needed

I think this book should be required reading for all high school and college seniors. I also believe it would be a good idea to keep it in your reading rotation so that you came across it again every 2 to 3 years.

Why is this book so needed? Well, I think the answer to that can be found first and foremost in what this book is not. It's not filled with tests that are supposed to help you figure out your gifting. It's not filled with pie-in-the-sky talk of finding the job that's going to make your whole life great. It's not trying to provide generic answers to tough questions. It doesn't make any promises to make you rich.

What this book does and does well is to provoke thought about who you are and what impact you can make on the world around you. It's realistic! Margaret has taken great pains to point out the myths that abound about finding the perfect job that never causes stress and makes you a ton of money. She points out that often our passion and calling result in a career choice that meets our financial and emotional needs, but sometimes our career may simply be a means to meet our physical needs thus enabling us to pursue our passion and calling. I especially like the questions and surveys throughout the book that are intended to cause reflection. I believe many who read this book will discover things about themselves that will validate their current career choices or cause them to rethink them.

As someone who made a major career change in the past 4 years and who still has many decisions left to make, I whole-heartedly recommend What the heck am I going to do with my life?. Whether you're still in school or just not satisfied with where you are this book is well worth your time. I fully intend on using it as a small group study in our 20somethings ministry and hope that other ministry leaders will do the same.
