To me, the immense power of Watters' ideas can be found in those two words. In The Revenge of the Monsters of Education, Watters presents the often-overlooked negative implications of lauded education technology trends like automation, algorithms and personalization. She also boldly examines the effects of sexism, imperialism and systemic inequality within education technology on learners of all ages. While some of the keynotes have talking points that overlap, each piece brought me unique, provoking insights. Best of all, Watters' keynotes are well-researched and humorous, making them both informative and enjoyable, even if you don't agree with all of her views. I would not recommend this book without an instructor or without the guidance ...

Its meant for immersion. I would not recommend this book without an instructor or without the guidance of a native speaker. While the content isn't hard do not be decieved (95%+) almost all the book is in Arabic including the instructions. If you are planning self study to start I would recommend alif baa + al kitaab or The standard Arabic elementary - intermediate for beginning to learn.

I had mixed feelings about this book. Maybe two stars is too generous. Although it seems to cover Egyptian Arabic topics that would be good in a text book, it's hard to tell, because all of the instructions are in Arabic as well! I know that this is a tactic used by many who write foreign language texts. I should know; I own literally hundreds, and speak many of the languages. But in this instance, for me, nothing was intuitive enough to even know where to begin. I needed it for a class and the teacher was somewhat fit to be tied, as well. She was openly frustrated by this fact and would have to translate the instructions for every single exercise she wanted us to do in the book. Just this one fact can take a five star book to nothing pretty fast. No sense in buying a "good" book you can't use. Save your money, if you can.

Excellent book but not for self study

As with the rest of the books in this series, the present volume lays out a very useful course for the practical study of the Egyptian dialect of Arabic. The vocabulary is high-frequency, and the expressions taught are those in common use.

The book appears to be primarily designed for use in the courses taught in the International Languages Institute (ILI) in Cairo; so only a minimal amount of support (one CD, no answers to exercises, no explanation in English) is provided. Thus the book would probably be excellent if used with a teacher, but is unlikely to be helpful to someone working on his/her own. I would give it four stars if used with a teacher, but only two for use in self-study.

Actually a juicy read!

The story is getting more juicy now. With their secret out to the news. How is Dante going to handle everything and will they end. I can't wait to see Sash's news of being pregnant going to make it worse and have Dante running for the hills. Best of all what is going happen to Tess once Dante finds out she was the blackmailer that leaked the pictures. Awesome can't wait for book 5!

Surprisingly interesting and easy to read for a textbook.

First off, let me say, this book is a textbook. If you are looking for a fun book to pick up and lose yourself in, this isn't it. But if you are looking for a book that will really help you understand how a young child, usually with no direct instruction, can go from being non-communicative at birth to being able to communicate in mostly correct and complete sentences by age four, this is for you.

I had to read this entire book, cover to cover, for a college class, and I did enjoy it. Yes, I was reading a textbook, but the material is interesting and the author puts in a LOT of real-life examples which really helped to keep me interested and engaged. I learn well through example, and every topic had one or more stories of experiments done on children or studies done on children to illustrate the concept being discussed. I loved this, as it really made the topics comprehensible and fascinating for me!

I also appreciated that the author presented multiple theories for everything. I'm not sure which theory Hoff subscribes to, because she presented a wide variety in a balanced way. I feel this gave me a fuller understanding of the field.

It did get dry at times. The author did go into detail on EVERYTHING. But that is because this is an introductory book covering a HUGE spectrum of information intended for those who have no background in it. So, for me, I needed that information. There was very little where I wished the author would just get on with it, in general if I got overwhelmed it was at the sheer amount of information contained in the pages.

This was, by far, my best text book this semester. It was accurate, it was interesting (for a textbook), and I feel like I have walked away with a lot of great information from reading it.

I'M USING THIS BOOK AS A TEXT FOR MY LINGISTICS CLASS, AND I FIND THAT IT'S QUITE DISORGANISED. ASSIGNED READINGS FOR A PARTICULAR TOPIC HAVE TO COME FROM PORTIONS OF DIFFERENT CHAPTERS BECAUSE OF THE WAY HOFF SET UP HER CHAPTERS.
