Excellent Classroom Edition

"The Essential Rousseau" is an edition of, as its name suggests, Rousseau's most essential works, including his "Discourse on the Arts and Letters" and "Discourse on the Origins of Inequality" in their entirity, as well as excerpts from other major works, including "The Social Contract" and "The Savoyard Priest". The translation is clear and accurate, the selection of tests is appropraite and accurately reflects what I would consider to be essential. There's a good brief sketch of Rousseau's life and work in the beginning, and a quick introduction to each work. All in all, this is a fine edition for assignment in the classroom and for students.

Innacurate Account of the Truth

Lowell Bair, while providing the "essential" works of Rousseau, fails to provide an accurate account of what it was Rousseau truly wanted to say. Refer specifically to the Social Contract Book II, Chapters VI and VII, pertaining to the law and to lawgivers. Bair, through his own interest decides to cut out nearly every instance that Rousseau made regarding religion and God. As a religious man, Rousseau felt that it was extremly pertinent that religion, though it may cause conflict played an essential role in the formation of a state and the laws that bind it. For, there can really be no secular state. Now Bair, decided to cut this out, in several instances leaving the reader to only infer that religion was deep rooted in his writing. Whereas, In the true reading of the work, it is obviously clear. I think that this is a twisted version of the truth, and through reviews like the other one stated, that people who do not know but would like to know these writers will become blinded by authors who corrupt and throw their own "perspective" and "translations" into texts like the "Essential Rousseau" by Lowell Bair. You want to read the true account, read the original works, and even better in the original language it was meant to be read in!

Since the Glorious Guhyagarbha lays out this profound view in great detail, it is known as the "King of All Tantras," the "peak of all yanas," the "source of all doctrinal schools," and the "universal explanation of all scriptures." It is the "final intention, thought, and realization of all buddhas," the "ultimate result of all yanas," the "great passage of all the Victorious Ones of the three times," and the "supreme highway of all yogis and yoginis." Together, these are known as the "Eight Greatnesses" of this tantra. Along the course of history, many great masters and practitioners have achieved full realization by engaging in the Secret Essence teachings. Today we are connecting with this very same path by studying, contemplating, and meditating on the nugget essence of the Dharma through these instructions. We are finally discovering the profound and mysterious secret that has been hidden from us for such a long time: the guhya garbha, or "secret essence," of the inherent nature of reality.

A Monumental Achievement is this Splendid Book which Opens the Gate to Wisdom

The Khenpos as teachers have created a monumental legacy to bring the King of All the Tantras to the West. They have opened the Gate of Vajrayana Buddhism for us and we just have to step into the pages of this book and then practice and actualize their precious teachings. The history of the Guhyagarbha Tantra as well as Tantra in general is presented. The outer and inner tantras are discussed. Particularly interesting are the teachings on the Bardo or Afterlife. Everyone wants to know what happens when we die and here, in this book, step by step explanations are discussed. The Zitro practices of the Peaceful and Wrathful Deities which appear after death are also fascinating topics. My favorite teaching is the culminating chapter towards the end of the book which guides students to practice this tantra which is also known as The Secret Magical Net of Illusion. This precious book by the Khenpos gives us the backround history, view, path and the ultimate way to enter the gate and pass through this samsara net of illusion. It is a monumental achievement in Vajrayana Buddhism and the Khenpos' gift of Dharma to the West. Pema Gadron

THE GREAT GUYAGARBHA, KING OF ALL TANTRAS! HO!!!

The Great Guyagarbha Tantra is the first direct teaching (first oral and then on paper) that directly teaches, DEFINES, and brings us that much closer to realizing what we actually are, and what all reality actually is. It is considered fundamental by ALL MASTERS OF ALL SCHOOLS of VAJRAYANA BUDDISM. To use the term “revelation” in its effect on me, is not over-stating or dramatic because its purpose is just that; to reveal to us the True-Nature that is the only absolute condition for everything. Now how on Earth can a teacher or teachers convey that?! Well, that’s where masters come into the picture. The authors of these Teachings on the Great Guyagarbha Tantra, are the Venerable Khenchen Palden Sherab Rinpoche and Khenpo Tsewang Dongyal Rinpoche. They speak in a way that is completely authentic to the teachings yet so beautiful, so simple, so straight forward. (LOL! I am almost in tears with appreciation at this very moment!) Yet also, because Khenpo Tsewang speaks English so beautifully, it is HE who is speaking to us in his own voice and at the same time translating Khenchen’s (Khenpo’s brother) native Tibetan in a perfect and enlightening manner. I know this because I have been fortunate to recieved their teachings in person. Alas, (and TRULY as equally important to mention here), is the editing. I mean, this is a book, but it sounds like I am describing an audio recording! That, my friends, is where the magic of the current editing and translation team of Pema Samye Ling (PSL) come into the picture. (dang…I’m about to get teary again!…Abide, abide…ok, I’m cool.) Anyway, originally these teachings consisted of two summer sessions for groups of students on retreat. The teachings were recorded culminating into countless hours of audio. That’s when this team of EDITING-ARTISTS created a seamless stream that feels as if you are ACTUALLY THERE. Really, this was my experience the first time I read it. I cannot even begin to get into the actual teachings here. They are too vast and perfect for a review but again I will say that it is THE fundamental teaching revealing to us the True-Nature of Phenomena exactly As-It-Is. It is currently my own daily study and will continue to be so indefinitely. I should also mention that each teaching, within this Teaching, is an entire meditation unto itself. So, there are probably a hundred (if not hundreds) of meditations in here. Any person along the Path should BUY THIS BOOK, absorb it, and allow it to naturally progress your realization.

The other two reviews existing at this time are exellent and I will just add my confirmation. Two weeks ago I finished another book from the same authors (Key to Opening the wisdom Door of Anuyoga). That book was a real blessing for me and I keep it and the authors in the highest esteem. I am delighted to have the opportunity to spend more time with them. It is REAL Quality Time! Having said that, I would like to add, that the level of these teaching is comparable to e.g. Albert Einstein's " Theory of Relativity" , so you would have to know a little bit about physics and mathematics already otherways the blessing will not materialize. To know in that context means embodied experience and knowledge, not just intellectual knowledge! As a matter of fact the loosing of the net of reference of the intellect is the whole point!

Lacks coverage of new features

The product description for AWDWR4 includes this paragraph:

"Rails 4 introduces a number of user-facing changes, and the ebook has been updated to match all the latest changes and new best practices in Rails. This includes full support for Ruby 2.0, controller concerns, Russian Doll caching, strong parameters, Turbolinks, new test and bin directory layouts, and much more."

Shockingly, AWDWR4 includes no discussion of some of the aforementioned changes, including Turbolinks and strong parameters, which are the first two subjects I searched for in my copy of AWDWR4. The authors simply included a link to Turbolinks' GitHub repo, and there is literally not one mention of the term "strong parameters" in the whole book! AWDWR4 seems to be a hastily-updated version of AWDWR3, which I also own.

If you already know Rails 3, I recommend that you not waste your time or money on AWDWR4. After realizing that AWDWR4 is worthless, I bought PDF copies of Rails 4 in Action and The Rails 4 Way. (The print versions of these books are available for pre-order at Amazon.) These two books are currently in beta, but they're already over 700 pages long and they include sections devoted to strong parameters, Turbolinks, etc.

In the past, I bought Pragmatic books without bothering to evaluate them beforehand because their books had always been high-quality. This seems to no longer be the case, and I won't buy another Pragmatic book until one is recommended to me by someone I trust. Pragmatic joins O'Reilly in this regard.

In response to a comment on my review, I compared the indexes in AWDWR3 and AWDWR4. What motivated me to compare the indexes was the fact that AWDWR4's index doesn't include entries for either strong parameters or Turbolinks, which is surprising for a Rails 4 book. I checked the first pages of both indexes and here's what I found:

Same number of pages. (These are the pages in AWDWR4 that should have included discussion about strong parameters.)

Good for beginners

This is the second book on Rails that I purchased to learn new features in Rails 4 (the first one being Ruby on Rails Tutorial - I bought the paper copy which covers Rails 3 but the free online version covers Rails 4). As someone relatively new to Rails, I found this book easy to follow. I tried all the sample code and it worked without any problems. The explanations accompanying code is clear for the most part. Since I already learned the Rails way of doing things in Ruby on Rails Tutorial book, the main value addition in this book for me was in Part III - Rails in Depth - a lot is discussed and several ideas tossed around for someone to use in a real project.

The main downside of this book is that some of the treatment is superficial. For example, an authentication mechanism is developed in the book which is good for illustrative purposes but it's not replaced with a relevant gem that's ready to use (such as devise). This book uses MiniTest for the most part for automated tests. In my work place MiniTest is considered to be too basic in terms of functionality/scope and therefore cucumber/rspec/capybara are used instead. This book barely mentions these gems and capybara is not mentioned at all. Another thing to note is that this book does not use TDD but develops tests as after the fact - which is not necessarily bad in itself (depending on your style of development) but something to be aware of.

If you are a beginner to Rails, you can checkout either this book or Ruby on Rails Tutorial book - both will get you started. If you have preference towards TDD, then go with Ruby on Rails Tutorial. Personally I liked the TDD style of Ruby on Rails Tutorial. I suspect that neither of these two books will be very useful to intermediate/advanced Rails developers.

A great starter for a rails noob

I have some experience for C# .net web development as a business information technology student. I'm a complete noob with practically zero knowledge of ruby and ruby on rails. Regardless I find this book very intuitive to follow, and I think if you know any object oriented language to some degree, you can pick this up and start learning ruby and rails easily at the same time.

To make the point clear, I think this book is NOT for total newbies due to the way many concepts are just thrown around without explanation, but great for those who know the basic programming concepts already and just want to read something that makes them see the big picture of rails and get started as fast as they can.

I think I won't be going back to .NET for a long time..

About the Author
Robert W. Kolb is a Professor of Finance and Director of the Center for Business and Society at the University of Colorado. He is author and editor of over a dozen books and numerous articles on finance and investments. He devotes his time to writing and research, especially in the areas of futures markets, investments, and bond portfolio management. He was previously a Professor of Finance at the University of Florida, Emory University, and the University of Miami.

James A. Overdahl is Chief Economist at the Commodity Futures Trading Commission in Washington, D.C., and has held senior positions at the Risk Analysis Division at the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency and at the Securities and Exchange Commission. He has been an adjunct professor of business at Georgetown University, Virginia Polytechnic Institute, George Mason University, and Johns Hopkins University. It may be a text book but....

I purchased this book as a reference to answer certain questions I had after finding the publishers companion website.
As a futures trader, I realized that in order to be efficient as a trader I had to better understand the purpose of the very market I chose to derive an income from. Once had a general understanding of why the futures market exists, I began looking at things differently. I realized that a price movement in a futures contract is a result but not the cause. Everyone knows that indicators lag, but as it turns out, so does price. This book helped me better understand the why better than any other book.
