Very useful if you live in Australia and have a guitar

I have had the 1976 reprint of this 1964 first edition of "The Penguin Australian Songbook" for over 30 years. It is worn out and falling to pieces due to excessive use. I learned most of the Australian songs which I know from this book. It has the melodies and the words and the guitar chords. Who could ask for anything more?

A particularly good feature is the multiple versions of some songs, like "Moreton Bay", "The dying stockman", "The old bark hut", "The Queensland drover", and most importantly, "Waltzing Matilda".

The songs are grouped according to 6 topics. There are commentaries on the songs, giving sources and history.

The skill level required for these songs is about as low as you can get. Anyone who can play a dozen chords on a guitar and sing in tune should get a lot of good value from this classic songbook. And for people outside Australia, I should explain that these songs are genuine. They are the true traditional songs of Australia, not a commercial mish-mash.

The life of Sadhu Sundar Singh was most remarkable in its Christ-likeness. He was born amidst the depths of Indian culture and religion, and into a Sikh family. During the early part of his life, Sundar's mother would take him week by week to sit at the feet of a sadhu, an ascetic holy man, who lived some distance away in the rainforest.

But with the death of his beloved mother when he was only fourteen years old, the young Sundar grew increasingly despairing and aggressive. His hatred of the local missionaries and Christians culminated in the public burning of a bible, which he tore apart page by page and threw, into the flames.

Yet before long Sundar was intent on taking his own life. Sundar had arrived at a point of desperation: he had decided to throw himself under the Ludhiana express if God did not reveal to him the true way of peace.

At three in the morning he rose from his bed and went out into the moonlit courtyard for the ceremonial bath observed by devout Hindus and Sikhs before worship. He then returned to his room and knelt down, bowed his head to the ground and pleaded that God would reveal himself. Yet, nothing happened.

He had not known what to expect: a voice, a vision, and a trance? Still nothing happened. And it was fast approaching the time for the Lothian express.

He lifted his head and opened his eyes, and was rather surprised to see a faint cloud of light in the room. It was too early for the dawn. He opened the door and peered out to the courtyard. Darkness. Turning back into the room, he saw that the light in the room was getting brighter. To his sheer amazement, he saw not the face of any of his traditional gods, but of Jesus the Christ. . . .

From here on the life of Sundar Singh became most Christ-like. Being unwilling to denounce his Master, it was not long before his family had rejected him. Sundar took the saffron robes of the sadhu and began a life of spreading the simple message of love and peace and rebirth through Jesus. He carried no money or other possessions, only a New Testament.

He traveled India and Tibet, as well as the rest of the world, with the message that the modern interpretation of Jesus was sadly watered down. He visited the West twice, traveling to Britain, the United States, and Australia in 1920, and Europe again in 1922.

With the large number of "spiritual paths" and "techniques", facing the world of today it is of special value to consider the life and insights of one who truly embraced the simplicity, love and freedom offered through devotion to Christ.

"I am not worthy to follow in the steps of my Lord," he said, "but like Him, I want no home, no possessions. Like Him I will belong to the road, sharing the suffering of my people, eating with those who will give me shelter, and telling all people of the love of God."

One of our favorites. Anker Dahle wrote the original Publisher's Forward; Sundar wrote the Preface and the booklet itself.
Only after some close friends pleaded for years that he write down some of his visions did he defer to their wishes. In it he briefly details basic information about death, the lake of fire, hell, the region of the dead, paradise, heaven, angels, saints, relationships, and some of his observations while in "the world of spirits." When he spent extended time alone with God, at times his spiritual eyes were opened and he met and conversed with saints and angels. They answered many of his questions; he relates some of them here. Sundar writes [page 5] that "this 'communion of the saints' was a fact so real in the experience of the early Church that it is given a place among the necessary articles of their faith, as stated in the 'Apostles' Creed'." I also noticed this experience described in some of our hymns, such as Johnstone's The Church's One Foundation: "Yet she [the Church] on earth has...mystic sweet communion with those whose rest is won." Because the contents of this booklet are so different from what Christians in the Occident would expect, we strongly recommend that a person first read a good biography of the man, such as that by Phyllis Thompson (who begins each chapter with one of Sundar's parables). In my many, many years of teaching, before retirement, this was one of the books I found to be more useful. These are activities that truly promote "active learning" experiences. Plus, most of the activities can be used in any class, regardless of the subject. These activities can also be adapted for use at various levels, from elementary school to graduate school. A really great teaching resource!

Active Learning has changed the experience of my students in the classroom. With such a variety of ways to get them involved with the process, a lot of the pressure is off of me to make it happen. They now engage with enthusiasm in their own learning and the energy of the room is palpable. Any teacher looking for a mentor to stand beside them and desires to have an impact in the lives of others from the front of the room, needs this book. The book has been modularised quite well to allow for separation of learning outcomes.
For example, a reader already familiar with how to install nginx can confidently skip chapter 1 and jump right into the meat of configuring the server.

Even for people extremely familiar with nginx, you will find this book extremely helpful as a reference for neat tips to optimise your server for best performance. (check out Chapter 8: Introducing Load Balancing and Optimization)

Best of all, unlike a lot of technical books i find myself reading, this book was quite easy to read, a lot of books in this domain tend to be far too dense and end up disengaging the reader

Informative and Readable

There a quite a few books out on Nginx which reflects on the popularity of this web server. I figured any book making it to a 3rd edition had to be good and I was not disappointed. The material is well organized which allows the reader the opportunity to read the information in whatever order they need dependent on their expertise.

I was migrating from Apache and found that section of the book to be very useful. I did not appreciate how Nginx could make enabling SSL certificates so much easier than Apache until I read 'Setting up an SSL Certificate' in Chapter 4 and 'Securing Communications with HTTPS' in Chapter 9.

The book is not only informative but readable which is unusual in a technical book. I hope the 4th edition explains the limitations of the windows version of Nginx now that it is available. Highly recommended!

Very good information available . . .

if you can force yourself to hang (ha!) in there. The poor quality of the book itself is almost offensive - I haven't seen that kind of paper since the pages of coloring books. And he can't draw worth beans. There is nothing visually appealing about this book, which is ironic considering the topic. But read on and you'll find some gems hidden within. It might be worth 5 stars - I don't know. I can't get past the awful presentation (the profit margin on this book must be terrific).

The Idea is To Inspire

I really like this book, and have made a couple of mobiles using the instructions here. Sure, it is a simple little book with no color photos, but the idea is to inspire and push the reader to creativity. In this kind of art form, there is no right or wrong, just balance. There should be no little step by step photo instructions. There is good information in the text about basic balance and construction, but the idea is not to "copy". It really is necessary to read the book as this artist really knew about mobiles and wanted other artists to express their vision with whatever artistic object they could hang on a wire or string.

What a disappointment! Great content however the poor spelling and translated information takes away the credibility of the subject. Did anyone even proof read the Kindle edition? I would have given it a 1 star but I didn't "hate it" -- still has a lot of relevant points - just painful to get through them.

Rehabilitating historicism for the contemporary philosophy of history, he argues, "reveals the basic truths about the nature of the past itself, how we relate to it, and how we make sense of the past in historical writing."

At the heart of Ankersmit's project is a sharp distinction between interpretation and representation. The historical text, he holds, is first and foremost a representation of some part of the past, not an interpretation. The book's central chapters address the concept of historical representation from the perspectives of reference, truth, and meaning. Ankersmit then goes on to discuss the possible role of experience in the history writing, which leads directly to a consideration of subjectivity and ethics in the historian's practice. Ankersmit concludes with a chapter on political history, which he maintains is the "basis and condition of all other variants of historical writing." Ankersmit’s rehabilitation of historicism is a powerfully original and provocative contribution to the debate about the nature of historical writing.

Chapter four considers Lessing's science fiction series, 'Canopus in Argos', tracing sources from Oriental literature - a key which unlocks many areas of obscurity.

"The Sagebrush Bride" a lesson in history and a must read.

Amanda Cabot succeeded again! I just finished reading her short story in, "The Oregon Trail" entitled, "The Sagebrush Bride" and found it to be a delightful story. Amanda candidly portrayed some of the hardships, including sickness and death, that the early pioneers had to face on their trek to their destination in Oregon. As expected from Amanda, "The Sagebrush Bride" was filled with unique situations and realistic characters that all come together nicely to insure a good, substantial read from the start of the story to its end . Unfortunately, "The Sagebrush Bride" ended too soon for me!

Wonderful Stories of the Oregon Trail

The recent release of The Oregon Trail Romance Collection features novellas penned by Amanda Cabot, Melanie Dobson, Pam Hillman, Myra Johnson, Amy Lillard, DiAnn Mills, Anna Schmidt, Ann Storey and Jennifer Uhlari. The stories are all located on the Oregon Trail during the middle 1800s.

As an avid reader who selects historical fiction by Christian authors almost exclusively for my pleasure reading, I think, over the past thirty plus years, that I have read every setting, theme and situation imaginable! Yet, I found within the covers of this book some wonderfully creative stories and situations with fresh spins which not only delighted and surprised me, but added markedly to very enjoyable reading. I read novellas because they are by favorite authors, but I prefer full length novels. I did find each of these stories fully developed stories that include plausible characters, interesting themes and a unique insight into the entire scenario of these 'people' and this place and time. Still, I was not ready to leave the trail when the end came! Basically, each of these individuals, for a variety of reasons, traveled west to find new lives. I wanted to be with them, to see how lives were changed and fulfilled in a new place!! Great job, ladies!

I highly recommend this book. While it is a compilation of fictional stories, each author's robust research and their understanding of the real stories of the Oregon Trail enabled these talented writers to produce stories that are reasonably realistic of the adventure, the hardships and life on the trail. And, as I expressed previously, as much as I was tired of the dust and the endless miles of walking and as exhausted as I was at the end of each day, there were so many new friends that I regrettably left them to settle into their new lives. I hope some day to catch up with them!

Faith based pioneer romance.

A collection of faith based stories for those who like to romanticize about living in pioneer days. I have enjoyed the different characters and situations these folks encountered both in daily living and in their romances. The rough edged pages make you think this book came right out of the pioneer days which added a nice touch.
